What? No cell phone or GPS?

By

This morning I was out the door before 4am, driving a son to the airport for yet another adventure (for him). Due to various reasons, I ran out the door in somewhat of a hurry, jumped in the car and off we went into the dark morning. We were almost to the airport when I realized two things. One, I had forgotten to grab my cell phone on the way out the door. Second, because it was dark and I'm somewhat eyesight challenged in the dark I didn't want to take my eyes off the road, so didn't go through the process of finding the right icon to press on the screen of my relatively new car to get the GPS map up. So I wasn't following along with GPS.

Why is this important?

First, I never go anywhere anymore without my phone. It's my office and stay-in-touch with people  device. It's got a GPS system in case I need it. I can take photos. If I was in an accident, I could contact someone asap. If I needed to look something up, I could do it right away. So for a brief moment, I had a flash of consternation.

What if my son left something in the car and needed it before he got on the plane? What if something happened on my way home? What if my husband needed to get in touch with me? What if this and what if that?

And also, it's so much easier to remember where turns are if the GPS is on and you can follow along. Or, if you don't know where you're going, you can plug in your destination and get step by step directions. This morning, I knew where I was going, but everything looks different in the dark and it would have been helpful to be able to glance at the map and see how many more streets until the one I needed. So I had a touch of consternation about that as well.

And then what?

I smiled! This was a flashback to when I got my driver's license way back before cell phones and GPS existed. I actually still carry an atlas in my car and if I really needed to figure out where I was or where I needed to be, I could have pulled over, pulled out the maps and figured it out. I haven't lost my ability to read maps!

And as for the phone, well, if I changed my route home and went through the center of town instead of the back roads I took going to the airport, if anything happened on my way home, I'd be in a busier place where I'd be able to find help. As for anything else? Who could possible need me at 4am?

So I turned up the radio, sang along to Bohemian Rhapsody which happened to be playing, opened the window a bit, and enjoyed the ride.

So what's the bottom line?

We have come to rely on technology for many things, but guess what. If we didn't have it for whatever reason, those of us who grew up without it would figure things out.  Would things be as easy as they are with technology? No they wouldn't. We'd have to think more and pay more attention. The way we used to.

And we'd adapt.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. If you got this far, thanks for reading and you'll be happy to know I made it home safely, walked in the door and immediately went to get my phone!

Hi Kat... some days when I need to run errands, I deliberately leave my phone at home just for the peace and quiet.

Good evening Kat Palmiotti ,

I'm sure it was a weird experience for you as we depend so much on technology (especially our phones)! But some how we maneuvered before and we can do it if we need too!

Oh my gosh, Kat...so many thoughts are going through my head. And, I can truly relate. Years ago, we went out for a quick dinner...maybe 10 minutes from the house.  I'd left my phone at home and nearly panicked. LOL Another time I thought I'd left my Filofax (remember those) at home. We were on our way to the airport. Before I could go into a full panic mode, Larry told me he'd brought it with him when he saw it on the counter.

And, yes, even with a GPS, we always have a large road map in the car. We've had to use it a few times on our long road trips when the roads were blocked.

Kathy Streib - Whoo hoo regarding Larry to the rescue regarding the Filofax! Regarding the phone, I had to remind myself of all the times we just jumped in the car and went wherever and just took care of things that arose. We didn't know there would be a day where we'd always be connected! There's some freedom in that!

I am glad that you got home safely, and I am not surprised at all that the first thing you did when you arrived home was check your phone, haha.  If I drive, there is no way that I can forget my phone, since my phone is the key to my car, so I am not going anywhere without it, haha.

That makes sense Brian England - you HAVE to have your phone in order to go anywhere! I don't!

I had to smile Kat while reading your post!  For years I traveled all over the country by car and we had no phones and no way of communicating unless we found a phone book. And yes I had those big map books- which I relied on and loved.  Funny thinking about it today!

Good morning Kat. As one who fells lost without my phone in my pocket, when I accidentally leave home without it, the first reaction is to panic! Then a feeling of relaxation comes over me remembering the days of the past when you kept a few quarters in the car so you were prepared if you needed a pay phone. And, I lived through it! Enjoy your day.

I immediately sensed your panic! I would have noticed my phone was missing within two minutes and would have gone back for it. And yes, I remember the ADC map books!  Before GPS, I used to call my Lee and say, "Where am I?" He would say, "Could you give me a hint?" 🙃   My phone is literally 'attached to my hip'... a bit higher and always on my waist. I have a quick, simple checklist before I leave. I do believe that necessity is the mother of invention!

I've never used GPS, and don't trust it around here. In fact, if someone who doesn't know the area intends to come to my house I tell them. Use a map! GPS takes people up an old logging road that ends at a locked gate at the back of our meadow - about a quarter mile from the house.

Back when I was a real estate broker I carried a phone all the time. Then when I started working from home I got rid of it. No cell service in ths valley.

Now that we have Starlink, I finally got a cell phone and got rid of the throw-away phone we kept in the car.

If only I could always remember to turn it on it would be helpful!

I was really glad to have it lst week when our Ziply landline was down for 4 days.

As for surviving. When I was a kid, we didn't have phones of any kind out here in the countryside. If we wanted to talk to someone, we had to get in the car (or on a horse if they weren't far) and go see them. Didn't get a phone until my firstborn was 2 or 3 years old.

Kat, it definitely is nice to have cell phones for emergencies and of course GPS.   I bet it was a bit freeing to not have your cell for a while, but still hoping for no emergency.

Out here, there are a lot of dead spots and GPS doesn't always work.  I have had GPS take me down a road and then face a large hill that GPS states continue.  Well, I can't continue and there is no way around the hill. I do agree having the mobile phone with me is essential.
