Bought a Generator in 2017, Never Used It

After Irma in 2017 and things calmed down we bought a generator.  Best insurance to not lose electricity, we started it when we bought it and the second time was the fall of 2024 as were preparing for a possible hurricane.  We bought a dual fuel meaning either gas or propane.  In 2024 I hooked up the LP tank and three pulls it started, never used gasoline in the generator.  We have eight LP tanks with each tank providing about 10 hours of run time.  It is a 5,000-watt generator which if needed we could plug in the refrigerator for periods of time, microwave and we have a floor fan if needed.  We have plenty of solar lights to bring in if needed along with battery powered candles.

Keep things charged if it looks like we might lose power, phones, watches, and computers.  Both electric companies that supply The Villages SECO and Duke Power have outage maps and information on their websites.  Sometimes it is just a transformer and maybe be without power a few hours or, let’s not talk about!

I think it's a great idea to have a generator, just in case. We have a whole house generator that kicks on a few seconds after the power goes out. Here in NW Montana, it's a life saver but it's good to know they aren't really needed in your area!

Good morning Dick. We never invested in a generator when we lived in Florida but looking back I should have. Like the dual fusel option and like you would use propane to periodically start it and make sure it will work when called upon. Luckily you live in an area of Florida where the call is rarely needed. Enjoy your day.

It always feels good to have insurance in case we need it, but then a bit frustrating to have paid for something we never used, haha.

Dick Betts I have a 10,000 watt Generac and I have used it 3 times that we lost power for about 4 days.  I love it.  It was like we had not lost power at all.

Hi Dick- When we lived in Delray Beach, we never had a generator. However for Irma, we stayed at our good friend's house and it had a whole house generator.

In Houston, Larry 'cobbled together" a system using 2 generators that can go through our breaker box. (so we don't have to have the cord going out a window or door. It works like a charm.  We have used it after an ice storm and a few other times.
