Friday Fun…Excruciating

When’s the last time you bought a car?  It’s been years for us. We tend to like what we buy. Rarely do we look at each other and say, “Let’s buy a car!”

We’ve had large SUVs and small convertibles; we’ve had sedans, sports cars,  and a VW bus. Larry does the majority of the work on them.  He enjoys tinkering, is good at it, and trusts only a handful of mechanics.

However, recently our 2009 Prius decided it was time to head out to the hybrid pasture. So off we went…to a place we never journey…where if you’re not careful, you’ll never be found again. (just kidding)

So, if you haven’t bought a new car recently, take heed.

-Pretend you can’t hear and walk around until you find the car you want. Otherwise, leave while you can!

-Don’t fall for the “this is included” line.
You can pay an extra $2500 for a “special warranty” that covers what your manufacturer’s warranty includes.

- For $500, you get our special car theft package. If your car is stolen, they can track and find it. Passed.

-Why do I need to speak with the Finance Department?

Even though we were paying cash, we had to wait 30 minutes to speak with the financial department so they could try to sell us more “extras.”

This whole car thing began at 11 am, and we were finally home by 6:30 pm.

So, for some Friday Fun, do you have any “fun” experiences car shopping?

Good morning Kathy. It is indeed an excruciating experience shopping for a car. We bought one with a supposed special treatment o the paint and interior. We said we did not want it. They said it was already applied and we had no choice. The one year guarantee was the minimum but our paperwork included the fee for a three year warranty. I finally got to the general manager, explained the donation and received a full refund for the treatment. Who knows if it was ever applied? The finance guy was terminated. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin it sounds as if you had a similar experience!  They didn't know who they were going up against.

I have never liked car shopping. We bought two new vehicles last year, a car for me to replace one I transferred to my son, and the new van. In both cases, we had to say "no" to many very strongly suggested offers - like Wayne Martin , one was special treatment on the inside and out which was especially pushed with the van. Anyway, car shopping is indeed excruciating.

Kat Palmiotti I can't imagine buying two cars in one year!  I like the car but I walked out wondering if I ever got a straight answer.

You can now hire a service for $1000 to negotiate and handle the entire sale for you!  Interesting - I may consider doing this next time we purchase - highest and best use.

Adam Chubbuck Really??   With your real estate background, I'd bet  you'd be a good negotiator. My husband was used to negotiating land deals so I wasn't worried. You have to be willing to walk away.

Oh my goodness, Kathy! I'm trying to think of a word that's even "worse" than excruciating and I can't. I've purchased my Hondas from Hendrick Honda for more years than I can count and as one of my past clients was the Sales Manager for their store in Concord, we have always been treated well because he would assign his best sales person to us. Since he retired we moved to their south Charlotte store, but the last time I went in they saw our record and the Sales Manager came right out and made sure the experience was not excruciatin.

Nina Hollander, Broker The last Prius we bought was when gas was high (again) and there was no negotiating to be done on a Prius. I've learned that if you're willing to walk away, it goes better.  Everyone at the dealership was nice but they're doing what they're trained to do.

Kathy Streib that's why I like having "a guy" at Honda. No hard sell and they give me the employee price + $100.

I never spend that time to buy transportation. When they ask too many questions, I ask them if the dealer down the road would ask as many, Kathy Streib .

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754  Way to go!  We were comfortable because we didn't have to buy the car and we were comfortable leaving.

Good morning Kathy,

We have always bought our Lexus from the same car salesman and I have sent lots of clients to him. He doesn't pull that crap! Gene and I always traded the same time but when he was so ill he knew he wouldn't be getting another. I didn't want his Lexus 460 as I felt it was too big and hard to drive and park. I sold it and bought myself a Lexus 350 which I love. Same salesman as always....he has many repeat clients and still there selling cars today!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX  We move so much that we probably couldn't do that! LOL   We bought our Jag convertible from a private individual and I bought my BMW years ago from an airline pilot who sold them new because of a business he had. LOL

The advice I will give you is to buy a Tesla, whether you follow my advice or not, haha.  If you do follow my advice, I guarantee you will be thrilled and end up wishing you had bought one many years ago!  If you don't follow my advice, but eventually down the road purchase one, you will realize that you should have followed my advice in the first place, haha.

From what you just said, it sounds like a Tesla is the perfect car for you!  They are amazing for long road trips. I take them all the time to California, to Colorado (my recent trip to Colorado and back cost me a grand total of $66.57 for "fuel", haha).  With regard to power outages, a Tesla can power your home when you have a blackout, haha.  I get it, though, there is always hesitation when you don't know how things really work, and there are haters for EV's.  The "issues" that you bring up, I know firsthand that they are NOT issues at all, but you will never know yourself.  Whatever makes you happy is the best thing for you!!!

Brian England we have a different situation. Our Prius is a plug-in hybrid so we have the best of both worlds.   We need a car that we can take on long road trips. Our other car is a Jag convertible, which while fun to drive, gets horrible mileage.   And, since we are in an area where we've experienced several days without power, we need a car that can run with the power is out.

I do all my negotiation over the phone. I pick the vehicle, pick the dealer, negotiate my trade in and then let them know I will not be staying or negotiating. They are usually very nice folks...just trying to maximize profits. I hold no grudge  :)

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I agree. People have to make money. Larry has a good way of negotiating so there are no hard feelings. I did chime in with questions and I guess they thought I was just an old dumb lady. I surprised them.

Hi George Souto We bought another Prius but this one is a plug-in hybrid.   Now I have to figure out how what all of the bells are that keep going off.

Hi Kathy,
There isn't a much worse buying experience than shopping for a car. Like you, I hold on to my cars for a long time, and they still look new when I sell them. The last one I sold was 13 years old. My van is 20 years old.

I tend to know what I want in a vehicle, so there really isn't much to the shopping experience other than getting through all the add-on B.S. And, I NEVER trade-in. I tell them not to even give me a trade-in value because they would just insult me.  I hope you love your new vehicle. What did you get?

May 15, 2026 07:33 AM

Carol Williams we get attached to our cars! LOL  I would still have my Expedition but we had 4 cars for two people. That makes no sense. We bought a Prius Plug-in hybrid, which is like what we have but you can plug it in.  We still have our Jag convertible but you can't drive it all of the time. I'd love a truck but we don"t need 3 cars.

Kathy, that DOES sound painful.   The last time I bought my Lexus, I told the guy I had AN HOUR to spend, and not a minute longer.   I knew which car I wanted, and wanted no nonsense.  I was out in an hour.

Working with Kelly is a good move

It’s been 8 years since I bought my vehicle. I drive my cars until I absolutely have to replace them, and most of them have around 200k miles by then. I stick to what my parents taught me: “Take care of it, and it’ll take care of you.” That pretty much sums it up for me. My vehicle of choice is the Jeep Cherokee—I’m on my sixth one. I’ve only bought one brand new; the rest were a year or two old when I got them. Buying brand new just isn’t my thing.

Kelly McGovern same with us!!! I'd rather someone else take the "Hit" when they drive off the lot. This was a 2026 Prius with 8000 miles and looks in mint condition. Your parents were right, take care of the car! I had a 280Z I bought pre-owned. My neighbor who drove them checked it out for me. Years later I sold it for $700 less than what I paid for it.

Hi Kathy:

Car shopping is not something I look forward to but we have been fortunate with our last purchase some years. Our second car buy was easy - we bought our older daughter's car.

Jeff Dowler, CRS now that's easy!!!  We bought an Expedition we had from Larry's hunting buddy. It wasn't that old but he decided he wanted the larger Ford Excursion.

May 15, 2026 05:31 PM
Jeff Dowler, CRS

Kathy Streib  It WAS easy - we paid my daughter blue book value and she went out and bought a new car. Coincidentally at the same time we  traded off our older "bum around car" to our younger daughter who needed a second car and we ended up with just 2 cars - enough for our needs!

I have some fun stories, but more about working at a dealership, rather than buying.

Rick started at the dealership (owner was his brother's best friend) when we got married. Over the years he went from mechanic to head of the service department for all three dealerships. He worked finance for awhile too. I worked there part time for many years covering customer satisfaction along side the dealer's wife. All three of our children worked there over the years too.

I feel your pain for your experience...but up until Rick's retirement we never had to actually go through it. Rick had a demo to drive and my cars were purchased or leased when the dealer needed to meet a quota and I got a great price. I am still driving my 2009 Jeep, which was the last one I got. (I love that car so much that I hope I never have to give it up!)
