Why Your Seed‑Started Veggie Plants Have Gnats And What To Do About It

If you’ve ever started a veggie garden from seed, like me, and suddenly noticed tiny gnats hovering around your pots, you’re not alone.

These are fungus gnats, and yes -frustratingly -they can show up even when you use fresh, bagged soil from the store. That’s because commercial potting mixes often contain organic material that stays moist, creating the perfect environment for dormant gnat eggs or larvae to hitch a ride.

They don’t come from your home; they come with the soil.

The good news is that fungus gnats are mostly a nuisance. Adult gnats don’t harm plants, but their larvae can nibble on tender young roots, slowing growth in seedlings.

After a google search, I learned that putting a small bowl of water with a splash or two of apple cider vinegar will attract the gnats to the bowl where they will get stuck and drown. I tried it - I have 7 gnats floating around already.

With a little patience, your seedlings will bounce back and thrive.

(I wish I learned this earlier since it's time to put them in the ground - but next year - I'll know!)

Dear Kelly,

That sounds like a good trick. Although most seedlings might withstand these guys on their own.

The seedlings seemed to be struggling a bit, but honestly, those pesky gnats were driving me crazy! Haha, it was probably more about me not being able to put up with them than anything else.

Kelly, good to know. I try to grow tomatoes and peppers in our yard, and sometimes I can see the gnats, and wonder why they are there. Vinegar bowl seems easy and something I can do.

Kelly, interesting!   I know I got worms on my geraniums that I took in and out of the garage in the cooler times.  My pest control person said it was the soil also.

Hi Kelly... I found this interesting even if I've never had this problem! (Mostly because I plant nothing... not veggies, not flowers, not nothing!)

Good evening Kelly,

Aren't you clever and thank you for sharing your findings! I've always heard problems exist from moist soil!

How interesting. I haven't noticed anything like that in my seedlings, but I'm going to bookmark this just in case.

Apple cider vinegar is really good for us and for a lot of things!  I don't like gnats on my skin, much less on plants around me, haha.
