Summer: The Season That Puts Pets At Risk  🐶🐱☀️🐾🔥

Don't Let The Summer Heat Win: Tips To Keep Your Pet(s) Safe All Summer Long

Although Summer has not yet "officially" arrived, in Charlotte it has arrived for all intents and purposes. This past week we've seen our temperatures reach well into the 80's and into the low 90's. We expect to see high 80's in the coming days and week.  We are talking about a weather forecast that is HOT, HOT, HOT! If it's hot for us humans, it's HOT, HOT, HOT for our pets. Our pets are more at risk in the summer months than any other time of the year.

How hot is too hot for your pet? Touch your hand to the ground for 5 seconds.  If it's painful or uncomfortable for you, it's too hot for your pet's paws.

ASPCA's infographic below points out the 5 Summer Dangers For Pets, which include sun and heat, fireworks and thunderstorms, hot cars, toxic chemicals, and parties and barbecues. Following the safety tips outlined in this infographic will ensure that your pets (and you!) enjoy a pawsitively winning summer!

5 SUMMER DANGERS FOR PETS: INFOGRAPHIC

Summer Pet Safety Tips

NEVER Leave Your Pet In A Hot Car

Every summer we hear stories on the news about pets that have perished in a hot car or were rescued from a hot car. Did you know that hundreds of pets die each year from being left in a hot car or from heat exhaustion?

A car heats up very quickly in the summer heat... don't take chances with your pet by leaving it in the car for even a couple of minutes. If it's  90 degrees outside, your car heats up to 114 degrees within 10 minutes and to 129 degrees within 30 minutes. Cracking your window open will not help keep the car cool enough for your pet. A pet can die or sustain brain damage in just 15 minutes in a hot car. Before putting your pet in the in your car during the hot summer months, ask yourself if you really need to take your pet with you – if the answer is no, leave your pet safe and cool at home.

How Hot Does Your Car Get In Summer

7 More Tips For Caring For Your Pet During Hot Summer Weather

  1. Be sure to have plenty of water available for both your dogs and cats when it's hot as they can get dehydrated much more quickly. Be sure to carry water with you when out with your dog.

  2. Don't leave pets unsupervised around your pool. If your dog swims in your pool, hose it off to remove chlorine and chemicals as soon as possible.

  3. Keep pets off of hot pavement and asphalt as much as possible to keep their pads from burning.

  4. Keep your pets protected against mosquito bites by not skipping on heartworm medicine in the summer months.

  5. Don't shave your longer haired dogs thinking it will cool them off... it might instead cause them to be sunburned.

  6. If you keep windows open in your home, be sure to install screens securely so that dogs and cats don't fall out.

  7. Know the signs of heat stroke in dogs and cats.

Staying aware of these summer dangers to our fur babies will keep the coming summer season a happy one for both pets and their parents.

Good morning Nina. When we lived in Florida we had a screened lanai with a pool and our Yorkie liked to run in circles around the pool. He did not like waters we never had to worry about him jumping in. We did have to keep a large bowl of water out there and keep him indoors in hot and yummy weather. Great tips! Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin my Bingo also does not like to get wet, including his paws. He does like to go out throughout the day on a hot and sunny day to sit in the sunshine on my front porch. Somehow, he always knows when enough is enough.

Nina, heat can be really bad for our pets, and know it will get really hot in July & August around here, and with humidity, that none of us are used to.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner hi Joan... can't say I've ever had a dog or cat that reacted badly to humidity. Heat is a whole other thing.

Good morning. These are excellent tips to share - and the heat graphic is so important for any pet parent to be aware of. Cars get hot VERY quickly!

Kat Palmiotti good morning, Kat... I'm always stunned by how quickly a car heats up... and despite all the warnings every summer, we still keep hearing about babies and dogs in the back of a parked car.

These are such important reminders for pet owners heading into summer. Many people underestimate how quickly heat affects animals, especially with hot pavement and parked cars. The five-second pavement test is a great tip because it really puts things into perspective. Here in the South, those summer temperatures can become dangerous very quickly for pets. Excellent safety information that every pet owner should read before the hottest part of summer arrives.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 thanks, Gwen. Fortunately, when our pavements start sizzling, I can throw Bingo into the car and drive him over to our neighborhood dog park where he can run around on grass.

To keep the pets happy, a lot of shade and a lot of water and maybe on occasion drop a few ice cubes to keep from boiling.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 hi Ed... so much of keeping our pets safe in heat is common sense... the problem is that common sense is often not very common!

I have to admit that I don't know much about pets or what they like or don't like, but it gets pretty hot in Arizona, so I would guess that they don't like that, haha.

Wonderful tips Nina Hollander, Broker , hopefully they will help the life of many K9 friends. Lately I've noticed a lot of lost and lose dogs in our community. There is also a home about a block away that leaves their two dogs out all day and that makes me sad.

Nina Hollander, Broker I'd say uncaring/unloving instead of sloppy. Worst of all is that if the pet dies they will run right out an get another.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... I see the same with lost dogs (and cats). I don't understand how people are so sloppy with their pets.

Jackie loves to sit outside and watch everything going on in the neighborhood, however today she will be sitting inside in the ac. We are not quick to turn it on, but today with it up in the 90's and the humidity we cranked it on. I have the blinds down to keep the house cool and am drinking plenty of water.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 hi Nick... my Bingo loves to sit on the front porch and watch the world go by while taking a sunbath. But he seems to know when it's time to come in and cool off.

HI Nina- I'm glad you wrote about this. We may have hit 90 degrees today and it was hot. And yes to the water.  Dogs love to go outside for walks but please carry water for them!!!

May 18, 2026 06:37 PM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Kathy Streib I do an updated post on this every year, Kathy. I see so much "abuse" of dogs (and cats) every summer... from walking them on hot pavements, to leaving them in a car, to walking them in the hottest time of the day, to leaving them outside all day in the heat.

Hot weather is hard on all animals including pets and livestock.  We have a covered veranda and this allows shade for our two dogs.  During the heat of the day between 3-5pm, they stay mostly inside.

May 19, 2026 07:01 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Leanne Smith hi Leanne... extreme heat and cold both are very bad for both us and our four-legged friends. I'm always gob-smacked when I see people leaving their dogs outside in those kinds of weather conditions. They should not be allowed to have pets.

Great tips to take care of furry friends, Nina Hollander, Broker . While we don't have pets ourselves, we enjoy seeing people hiking with their dogs during our weekend trips. Most encounters with pets are wonderful, and pet owners are typically careful to make sure their pet receives fresh water during their hikes.

Lynnea Miller thanks, Lynnea. At this stage of my life, my dog and my cat are my "babies." I can't imagine how I'd feel if I lost one of them because I was somehow negligent.
