WhatsApp, Keys and the Stove

By
Industry Observer DRE# ER40011786

My phone service I purchased for my US phone I THOUGHT had unlimited text and calling.   Found out quickly, I have 200 minutes of talking per month and 250 texts per month.    I must have already hit those numbers, as I got a message!  OOPS.   Good thing I got the Portuguese phone for backup.   I did download WhatsApp, as I didn't have any contacts on that phone, so added people I want to talk & text.

It does seem like every day I find something new here.    First, when I checked into my apartment, the key to the door is VERY different.    The last time I rented an apartment, I was 18 years old outside DC.   SO, this is different.   The key gets me into the building.

There is no oven in this apartment, there is an air fryer, microwave and an electric cooktop.   The cooktop is very different.   I wanted to cook some eggs, and had to play around for a while to get the stove turned on.

Going back to the bank today, as I am hoping to see a long-term rental today, and got to thinking - how do I pay for it?   HUMMMM, well, need a checking account probably, and also want to get Bill Pay set up for any bills like utility, etc.   Also, when you move to a foreign country, you have no credit, so hopefully the bank has a credit card I can apply for.

Really is starting to feel like retirement now, I don't have obligations to a seller or buyer, nor keeping track of a transaction.   Since arrival, I have felt tired, maybe it was all I went through to get here, but naps seem to be important.  LOL   I have been getting lots of exercise - from 7000 to 12,000 steps just walking around here.  Lots to see, and haven't used the car.

How exciting! I am going to learn a lot from you about moving to another country, and about Portugal. Having Portuguese blood (part of relatives from Azores), I'm looking forward to everything  you have to share!

Moving to another country really does turn everyday routines into adventures. Something as simple as turning on a cooktop or understanding a door key suddenly becomes a learning experience. I had to smile at the WhatsApp and phone plan surprise because those are exactly the little details nobody thinks about until after arrival. It sounds like you are slowly settling into the rhythm of retirement and enjoying the freedom to explore without the constant pressure of transactions and deadlines. Walking that much every day probably helps balance out those naps too.

Good morning, Joan... your post reminded me of how horrible kitchens often are in Europe. It's the jet lag that is catching up with you. I usually need one day for each hour of change to start feeling "normal." But I've had trips where it took a good two weeks to do so. By the way, you should also be able to speak with people via Facebook Messenger.

Good morning Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner it is a new world very different from the USA. Your adventures have began and siesta time is very common in other parts of the world. You will be skinny mini before long with all that walking. LOL

WhatsApp is great...just do not accept anything from someone you do not know. Especially from texts asking you to become a contact.

Gwen, funny, after my walk to the bank and the store for cat litter, got home and needed a nap again, and thought I got enough sleep last night.

Nina Hollander, Broker I have chatted through FB Messenger too.  You are right, kitchens just aren't the same here, and that is ok, don't really like to cook.

Carol Williams you are right.  Right now, an apartment, and being that I take the car rental back tomorrow, a car is in my future.   Then a printer, once I find a shop around here that sells them.

Hi Joan- your post reminded me of when I watch House Hunters Int'l. It's a surprise to see their kitchens. You're making headway and I can't wait to see what your apartment looks like!!!  Stay safe and have loads of fun.

Kathy Streib I posted today, and put a link to the apartment.   Kitchen is larger than my Airbnb, but in general they are small.

Leanne Smith stopped in to many agencies over the last few days, and one did have an apartment, and today I saw it.  LOVED it, and will sign the contract tomorrow.   Now, onto finding a car, then maybe a doctor or two.
