Charlotte Region Mandatory Water Restrictions 2026

What Homeowners Need to Know Right Now

Drought conditions across the Charlotte Region have led to mandatory water restrictions impacting homeowners throughout Mecklenburg County and surrounding counties, including Gaston, Union, York, and Lancaster.

If you own a home in the Charlotte Region, these rules directly affect how you may water your lawn, maintain landscaping, use your pool, and handle everyday outdoor tasks. Violations can result in fines, so understanding your county’s restrictions is essential.

Below is a breakdown of current Charlotte Region water restrictions in Mecklenburg, Gaston, Union, Lancaster, and York Counties.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Water Restrictions for Homeowners

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Water Restrictions 2026

Charlotte Water has issued mandatory conservation rules for all residential customers.

Even-numbered homes: Wednesday & Sunday

Pool Use for Homeowners

Existing pools may only be topped off Thursday & Sunday (6 p.m. – 6 a.m.)
Filling new pools is prohibited

Potential liability for firefighting expenses

This applies to all residential properties within Charlotte city limits.

Gaston County Water Restrictions for Homeowners

Gaston County Water Restrictions

Even where permitted, conservative water use is strongly encouraged. These are part of current Gaston County drought restrictions affecting all residential properties.

Union County Water has implemented Stage 2 restrictions affecting residential water use.

Lawn & Irrigation Schedule

Restrictions for Homeowners

No washing vehicles at home

If your home is served by a municipal system such as Monroe, check for any localized variations.

Lancaster County Water Restrictions

Lancaster County is under Stage 2 (Moderate Drought) restrictions tied to the Catawba-Wateree River Basin.

Lawn Watering Schedule

Even-numbered homes: Tuesday & Saturday

These Lancaster SC water restrictions apply to all Lancaster County Water & Sewer District residential customers.

York County, SC Water Restrictions for Homeowners

York County Water Restrictions

York County is also under Stage 2 drought restrictions, targeting a 5% to 10% reduction in water use.

Even-numbered homes: Wednesday & Sunday

Restrictions for Homeowners

Vehicle washing allowed only during assigned watering times
No washing driveways, sidewalks, or hard surfaces
No non-essential exterior cleaning
No decorative water features unless supporting aquatic life

Allowed

Handheld hoses, drip irrigation, and low-volume watering systems

These reflect current York County SC watering rules. Municipalities such as Fort Mill or York may have slight variations, so homeowners should confirm with their provider.

What Homeowners Across the Charlotte Region Should Do Now

These restrictions are mandatory and enforceable across the Charlotte Region. Homeowners should:

  • Follow assigned watering schedules exactly
  • Stop all prohibited outdoor water use
  • Monitor household water consumption
  • Stay updated with local utility announcements
  • Check for water restrictions in other Greater Charlotte area counties and towns: Cabarrus, Iredell, Lincoln.

Bottom Line for Charlotte Region Homeowners

Water restrictions are now part of everyday homeownership across the Charlotte Region during ongoing drought conditions.

Staying compliant helps you:

  • Avoid expensive fines
  • Protect your property
  • Support the long-term sustainability of the region’s shared water supply

Very informative! We're under restrictions as well in Naples. Enjoy your week.

Matthew Klinowski, PA thanks, Matt. We were under voluntary restrictions until last Friday. I think a lot of people weren't "volunteering." For some reason I haven't seen much information out there on the mandatory restrictions, so I thought a post would be a good way to get the word out.

Good Wednesday morning, Nina. This is good information to share with area residents.

We're expecting rain in Maryland this afternoon. We have unusually hot weather.

Thanks, Roy... at least someone is getting rain! Our weather is also unusually hot this week.

Excellent information to share for those in your area. I'm sorry to hear about the drought situation. Is there any rain in the forecast?

Kat Palmiotti thanks, Kat... we've been suffering for rain for a while now. And nothing in the forecast that will make a difference.

Ugh Nina Hollander, Broker - well, hopefully that will change soon!

Kat Palmiotti worst drought we've seen in 20 years in the Charlotte region. And all those people who live on the lakes and pay a premium for it can't get their boats in the water!

Very informative post! I remember water restrictions during some of my years in California. I think more areas are headed for the same.

Susan Isaacs, Real Estate Strategist hi Susan... we are seeing the worst drought conditions in the region in 20 years. And for some reason when they made the restrictions mandatory last Friday, I didn't hear much about them so I thought post that would also go on my social media would be helpful.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... so far these kinds of restrictions, which we've previously seen, are not too onerous. Hopefully they don't have to go to higher stages of restrictions. But it's still a pain in the you know what. With the hot weather it's stressing landscaping and grass.

Good morning Nina,

I've been reading about your drought conditions in Charlotte and that it's been the worst in 20 years! We had a huge thunder storm last night with lots of rain and was grateful for every drop we got. We need more rain but not as dire as you are!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX hi Dorie... we had a big rain storm about a week ago... but at this point just not enough to make up for lack of rain.

This is something that I don't understand since the earth is over 70% water and desalination isn't expensive, haha.

Brian England

It sounds like politics more than anything.

May 20, 2026 07:08 AM

Brian England hi Brian... I don't know about that, Brian. Desalination is a very expensive process for drinking water. I dealt with this kind of water when I lived in the Middle East and I'd rather not do it again.

May 20, 2026 06:49 AM

Brian England it's a nice idea but very expensive, uses a lot of energy, and can produce bad by-products.

Great info to share with all Charlotte, NC, residents, Nina Hollander, Broker! Who would want to pay these fines. Yikes! I am honestly very concerned about the drought conditions and increasingly short supply of drinking water. I decided to do my part and minimize my use of AI to not be a contributor. I'm also not watering my lawn this year. I will fill a watering can for my flowers, but that's about it. I am going to plant low-maintenance & drought-resistant ground cover in my little backyard instead of new grass seed.

May 20, 2026 06:53 AM
Nina Hollander, Broker

Andrea Bedard hi Andrea... I always try to be careful with my water usage if for no other reason than because water bills are so high. I'm passing on replacing sod this spring as I can't properly water it. I do have a drip system for my plants which doesn't use a lot of water. I also will be planting ground cover plants in the next couple of weeks in the bald spots in my front yard.

Until this week we had nothing either Nina Hollander, Broker but thankfully we received a third of an inch on Monday. That third of an inch has made an amazing difference but we too could use a lot more.

Bob "RealMan" Timm that's the problem now, Bob... we had about a 1/3 of an inch a week or so ago... but it barely makes a dent now.
