This Week…Wait and See

Bluebird season will be coming to an end in a few months. This season has been a strange one, but we’ve only been monitoring the boxes for seven years. Who knows…the birds are mum!

We are awaiting the hatching of (fingers crossed) 5 beautiful baby bluebird chicks this weekend.

Our Box 4 originally had 4 bluebird eggs. Two hatched. Something happened to one of the chicks, so there is only one chick. Look how much it’s grown…

                 Last week

At our home, we have a third brood of five chicks (there were only two last week!).

Warmer weather here in Texas means snakes. Depending upon your search, Texas has the most snakes of any state.

I don’t do snakes!  On a Girl Scout camping trip, we saw 5 snakes that weekend. One was in our tent.

I know this may send PETA down on me, but the good snake (to me) is a dead one. I’ve dispatched 2 coral snakes from our backyard.

This week, we saw this copperhead sunning itself on the walk.

UGH!

Love your weekly update on the birdies, Kathy. I can pass on pictures of snakes... as you said, the only good snake is a dead snake.

Nina Hollander, Broker I avoid snakes at all costs. Thankfully they keep the grass around the bluebird boxes short. It's easier to look for them.

As with Nina, I love your bird updates! That baby bird that's getting bigger should be flying soon!

Kat Palmiotti I wish we knew what happened to the other chick. With lucky, that baby should leave the nest this weekend.

Good morning Kathy,

I knew I'd have an update on the blue birds from you today so glad to read what has been going on with them. I'm with you on snakes! I can't stand the sight of them!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX I almost stepped on a coral snake when I stepped out of the truck on Larry's hunting lease. I am careful getting out of the car now, even at Kickerillo.

Good Wednesday morning, Kathy. Thanks for sharing your photographs.

We do not see many snakes in our community.

Roy Kelley  I'm glad you don't.  It's a disadvantage of living in a warm climate.

Good morning Kathy. Thanks for the bluebird update. As for snake, sorry PETA, I am with you. It looks like your position on snakes is more popular that the PETA position. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I know there are non-poisonous snakes and some people have them for pets but there is no way I'd have one in the house.

This is just me, but I think that snake would make a really nice pair of shoes.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty when I was a Brownie at camp, the Senior Girl Scouts raced to kill the snake if you hollered SNAKE. They killed it and made a hat band for their cowboy hat.

Wow, they grow pretty quickly after they hatch!  When I found that nest of chicks at the Mission Church, I immediately thought of you.

Brian England Have you been back to check to see if they're still there???   They do grow quickly. The juvenile bluebirds are as big as their parents now.

I have not, Kathy Streib since they are in Colorado and I am back in Arizona, haha.  Maybe when I am in Colorado next year, I will check on them, haha.

We have some kind of yellow and grey bird who has built a nest in a Japanese Holly right outside our front door who has laid a bunch of eggs. I don't want to be too inquisitive and scare the mother away.

Kathy this unusual year may be a cycle that happens every 7 years.  Next year should be a telling point if this is unusual or going to become the norm.

I"m with you on the snake thing.  I've run into a number of them during my hiking days. All us hikers would be sure to warn any other hikers that there was a snake siting.  My experience was that the snakes wanted away from us more than us from them.  There was ONE time I was sitting on an outcropping or rocks.  I turned around, looked up saw a rattler doing is thing.  I wasn't going to take a chance, I quickly climbed up the other side of the cropping and got the H out of there. I'll never forget that day! Thank goodness you weren't with me Kathy!

Kathy, so fun to watch your bluebird eggs!   I agree with you a good snake IS a dead one!   The snake you have here really is pretty though, but prefer it in a photo not up close and personal.
