When contemplating this move, I was thinking I would see what the public transportation is like before buying a car.
Once I got here, inquiring around, and the schedule is VERY relaxed during the off-season, and not reliable, the bus may come, or may not. It could come a half hour late. You just won't know.
SO, back to contemplating buying a car. SO far in the week I have been here, the car has sat in the parking space, other than when I had to take Lucy to the vet in Faro. Today I take my rental car back. I LOVE walking all over the city. It is getting hot, though - it was 81 here yesterday, full sun, and the humidity wasn't too bad at 40% or so. It is 48% right now.
I was worried about trusting a car dealer, but I heard from several people that Portugal is very strict on selling used cars. They have to go through a certified process and an 18-month warranty. YEA!
I did have a whole list of what I truly would want on a car, and had to discard, just finding a gas-powered car that gets good gas mileage, and in my price range, that is reliable, are probably now my only requirements.
I found a dude to assist me with the car purchase, now to jump through all the hoops! I have to have an address.... well, almost there. Need to show a utility or water bill, well....nope, don't have that. I will pay cash, so at least there is no credit check. Besides, I have to start over here in Portugal with credit. Your US credit does not follow you. I will apply for a credit card at my bank.
