We Have More May Colors in Prospect CT

We are into summer of sorts, even though the official day is a month away. We had chilly weather, then a recent snap with temps in the 90's and now back down to the high 50's.

The builder's wife that first lived in the house, was big on flowering shrubs and plants so there is no area of the yard that doesn't have some color in warmer weather.

At the bottom of the driveway, we have a rock garden which already had a bunch of daffodils and an early blooming rhododendron, and now the phlox are in bloom.

Up the other side of the driveway are the beds with iris and day lilies.

On the other side of the front lawn is an area with a large protruding rock surrounded by azaleas in hedgerow as well as a couple of pink rhododendrons.

Last fall, I gave the azalea rows a tight haircut so they are still in a bit of shock, but I can see the nubs starting to sprout.

We also have some colors in the rear hard with azaleas, laurels, and hostas, as well as hydrangeas. The walkway alongside the garages has had the early azaleas blossom already.

The hostas are thick and there are a couple of color styles.

Along the deck rails are planter boxes with a variety if annuals that will bloom through the summer and hopefully the tomatoe plants will add some delicious colors as well.

As we get more warm weather the peonies and astilbes will bloom and then we get the hydrangeas that are along the shed area that will carry us into the fall.

It takes some effort and attention but the sense of comfort and beauty they offer is more than worth it.

Ed, I miss a yard with lots of flower beds.   Now, will have an apartment, with a tiny balcony, not even large enough for pots.   All your colors are stunning!

Ed this is a gorgeous time of the year, and it would be great if it could last a little longer than it does.

Hi Ed,
Thanks for sharing. I love my phlox, one of the early-blooming plants. Unfortunately, they aren't so pretty after blooming.

Carol Williams  they are and yes, they aren't. I am going to make that rock garden smaller this year, so it is easier to mow around and plant different flowers next summer.

I do miss the Irises as well as the Lilac Bushes. Out here with water being scarce we don't water anything.
