Tips To Protect Your Pets This Memorial Day From Charlotte's Pet-Friendly Realtor®

It's Memorial Day and you can feel the excitement building as families prepare for backyard barbecues, a beach day,  fun-filled get-togethers. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and everyone’s ready to make the most of it.

While you're planning your festivities, don’t forget about the safety and well-being of your furry family members. Holidays can bring unexpected hazards for pets—from unfamiliar environments to tempting (but dangerous) foods and loud noises. So, as you celebrate this Memorial Day and head into a season full of summer fun, make pet safety a priority.

14 pawsitively simple tips to keep your pets safe, comfortable, and happy—not just today, on Memorial Day, but throughout this summer:

  1. Keep your pets in a a separate room or kennel when guests arrive and leave to minimize the chances of your pet escaping.
  2. Keep a leash nearby in case a pet does escape.
  3. Keep yard gates closed and locked (if possible).
  4. Keep pets away from hot BBQ grills, as well as from candles (especially citronella candles which are toxic to pets) and lighters.
  5. Keep entrances to pools closed/locked to minimize chances of a pet falling in. Keep in mind, pool water and chemicals used to treat it are a threat to your pet. Keep fresh water nearby and keep any chemicals out of reach.
  6. Keep your pets away from poisonous yard plants and areas where you might have used pesticides.
  7. Keep cool, fresh water around indoors and outdoors, especially when it's hot.
  8. If you're travelling, use safety restraints such as a pet seat belt or crate.
  9. NEVER leave your pet in a hot car.
  10. If taking your pet to the beach, always keep a fresh bowl of water available and discourage them from drinking from the ocean, the salt water can cause an elevated salt level, which can be deadly.
  11. Use only pet friendly sunscreen. Those made for human use can be toxic and deadly to pets.
  12. Know the signs of heat stroke in animals.
  13. Keep the phone number for your vet's emergency service or after-hours clinic and poison control handy and/or saved in your cell phone.
  14. If your pet is not micro-chipped make sure they wear a collar with identification.

Keeping Your Pets Calm During Fireworks On Memorial Day: 4 Tips

With fireworks being such a big part of many Memorial Day celebrations, here are four tips to help keep your pets calm:

  1. Keep your pets indoors with curtains/blinds shut during fireworks
  2. Allow your pets to hide indoors if that's how they cope.
  3. Turn on your TV or music during fireworks to help drown out the sound of fireworks.
  4. Feed your pets prior to fireworks. A full stomach helps to relax them and make them sleepy.

Wishing you and your pets a HAPPY and SAFE Memorial Day!

One of the benefits in living here in the middle of nowhere is our dogs are not subject to fireworks.  Also we keep them inside during the heat of the day. All of your points are good reminders. Thank you

Leanne Smith hi Leanne... it's been raining here so I don't know if we'll hear much of fireworks this evening. I don't take Bingo out when they are going off, but he's pretty chill about them. My former dogs were not.

Hi Nina- I love the dedication you have and share in keeping our furry friends safe. Our last dog, Lucky Marie, was terribly frightened of fireworks and storms. We must remember that our dogs and cats may not enjoy the sound of fireworks

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... you know I love those fur babies... I'd bring them all home with me if I could! I've been that way since I was a toddler. Drove my mother crazy dragging in stray cats and dogs. They finally got me a cat so I'd stop dragging in the strays.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner thanks, Joan. I'm always amazed how many people don't think about their fur babies and seem fine with stressing them out during a holiday like this... or even putting them in real danger.

George Souto good morning, George. Sadly, there are too many pet owners who don't think about this.
