Memorial Day 2026



One of the best movies I’ve ever seen is also one I can not bring myself to watch again. Every Memorial Day, I think of the line said by a dying Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) to Private Ryan (Matt Damon)...

 

Earn this.

 

                                         



Saving Private Ryan is the story of a squad of US soldiers during WWII who are sent to locate and bring home Private Ryan, whose 3 brothers were all recently killed in action. Private Ryan is saved.

 

When the movie ended, and we were leaving, I had to sit down and cry. It is the only time I’ve done this.

 

The message—just two words—should resonate with all of us who owe our freedoms and all that we have to those who paid the ultimate price.

 

 

Let’s all strive to live our lives in a way that honors the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for us.

Kat Palmiotti same here. We went to the Fallen Warrior Memorial this morning to pay our respects. It's a small one in Cypress. The larger ceremony will be held in Houston at the National Cemetery.

Memoria Day in a town that has a military base (we have two here on the Space Coast) seems to mean a bit more. We see young each day who might not be here tomorrow.

“Earn this” really is one of the most powerful lines ever delivered in a movie. Saving Private Ryan captured not only the brutality of war, but also the weight of sacrifice carried by those who served and those who survived. It is understandable why that film stays with people long after watching it.

Memorial Day is such an important reminder that the freedoms we enjoy came at an enormous cost. Taking a moment to reflect, remember, and honor those sacrifices is something all of us should do, not just today but throughout the year as well.
