When I was at the beach Saturday for the Fisherman's Festival, there were several "scantily clad" women on the beach, which led me to the question of nude beaches in Portugal.
Portugal has several official and unofficially tolerated nude (naturist) beaches. The practice is widely accepted, particularly in more secluded spots along the coast.
-
Lisbon Region:
- Praia da Adiça: An official nude beach backed by cliffs, located about 25 miles south of Lisbon in Fonte da Telha.
- Praia de Bela Vista (Beach 19): An official, clothing-optional beach located in Costa da Caparica.
- Praia do Meco: Known as Portugal's very first nude beach, situated about 25 miles south of Lisbon
-
The Algarve:
- Praia do Canavial: A secluded, cliff-backed cove in Lagos.
- Ilha Deserta (Barreta Island): Located in the Ria Formosa Natural Park off Faro, offering remote, sprawling sandy areas.
- Praia de João de Arens: A beautiful, clothing-optional cliff cove near Portimão.
-
Alentejo Coast:
- Praia do Malhão: Located near Vila Nova de Milfontes, it’s a rugged, expansive beach popular with naturists.
It does seem like Portugal is pretty lax about this as long as you behave.
