How ActiveRain Could Become Even Stronger

For many real estate professionals, ActiveRain has been more than just a blogging platform. It has been a place to learn, network, share expertise, and build lasting relationships with colleagues across North America. Over the years, countless members have benefited from the knowledge and encouragement of fellow bloggers.

Like any online community, however, there are opportunities to evolve and improve. As technology and user expectations change, ActiveRain can continue to strengthen its value by focusing on both platform enhancements and member engagement.

Suggestions for a Stronger, More User-Friendly ActiveRain

1. Modernize the User Interface

Many members appreciate ActiveRain's familiar format, but a refreshed design could make navigation easier, especially for newer members. Improvements might include:

  • A cleaner dashboard
  • Easier access to drafts and published posts
  • Improved mobile functionality
  • Simplified profile management
  • Enhanced search capabilities

A more intuitive experience would help members spend less time navigating and more time creating valuable content.

2. Improve Content Discovery

Thousands of excellent articles are published on ActiveRain, yet some outstanding posts never receive the visibility they deserve.

Potential improvements could include:

  • Personalized content recommendations
  • Topic-based feeds
  • Enhanced search filters
  • Trending article sections
  • Better categorization of local and industry content

Helping readers find relevant articles would benefit both authors and readers.

3. Encourage Meaningful Engagement

Comments have always been one of ActiveRain's greatest strengths. Features that encourage deeper conversations could include:

  • Comment notifications that are easier to track
  • Highlighting thoughtful discussions
  • Member recognition for helpful contributions
  • Community discussion forums on specific topics

The more members engage with one another, the stronger the community becomes.

4. Expand Educational Resources

New members often arrive with little blogging experience. ActiveRain could provide:

  • Blogging tutorials
  • SEO guidance
  • Writing workshops
  • Video training resources
  • Best-practice examples from successful members

Helping members become better writers benefits the entire platform.

5. Celebrate Member Success Stories

One of the most inspiring aspects of ActiveRain is seeing members achieve success through consistent participation.

Regular features highlighting:

  • Long-time contributors
  • New member achievements
  • Community service efforts
  • Business success stories
  • Educational accomplishments

Would help build community pride and encourage participation.

What Members Can Do to Positively Impact Other Members

While platform improvements are important, the true strength of ActiveRain has always been its members. Every member has the ability to make the community better.

Welcome New Members

A simple comment on a newcomer's first post can make a tremendous difference. Many successful ActiveRain bloggers stayed active because experienced members took the time to encourage them.

Leave Thoughtful Comments

Rather than simply saying "Great post," members can add value by sharing experiences, asking questions, and continuing the conversation. Meaningful comments create meaningful relationships.

Share Knowledge Freely

One of ActiveRain's greatest traditions is the willingness of members to help others succeed. Sharing expertise about marketing, real estate, technology, customer service, or local communities benefits everyone.

Recognize Others

A kind word, a recommendation, or a mention in a blog post can have a lasting impact. Recognition helps members feel valued and appreciated.

Focus on Encouragement

Not every member is a professional writer, but everyone has something worthwhile to contribute. Encouragement helps build confidence and promotes continued participation.

Lead by Example

The most respected members often demonstrate:

  • Professionalism
  • Kindness
  • Consistency
  • Generosity
  • Respect for differing opinions

These qualities help create a welcoming environment for all.

The Future of ActiveRain

Technology can improve a platform, but people create a community. ActiveRain's greatest asset has never been its software—it has been the members who generously share their knowledge, experiences, and support.

As ActiveRain continues to evolve, the combination of modern platform improvements and positive member engagement can ensure that it remains a valuable resource for current and future generations of real estate professionals.

A stronger ActiveRain begins with both better tools and better interactions. Every member has the opportunity to contribute to that future, one blog post, one comment, and one act of encouragement at a time.

This article is designed to encourage constructive discussion while recognizing the positive culture that has made ActiveRain successful for many years.

This blog post was inspired by the ActiveRain June Challenge hosted by Debe Maxwell, CRS and Lew Corcoran. However, it does not meet the following Challenge criteria.

Let's talk about how we can each be part of that future.

Criteria

  1. Share your vision for AR's future rooted in three or four pillars.
  2. Share what you consider is a positive impact on your readers.
  3. How can you improve your blogging techniques to keep people engaged?
  4. How will you create aliveness and good energy leaving no one out in the cold?

Good morning, Roy... you've obviously given this a lot of thought. I sometimes think that if the "entry fee" to the Rain and the road to a free account were higher, it would discourage people who are not serious about blogging from being on this platform.

As for "training," I learned a lot way back when by attending Bob Stuart's webinars. Sadly, no one has stepped up to take his place.

Good morning Roy. You have pondered this reply and your post gives active members and newbies alike suggestion to improve the experience here. Thanks!

Roy, your article highlights something many long-time members appreciate about ActiveRain: the platform succeeds because of the people who contribute to it. Technology upgrades can improve the experience, but encouragement, thoughtful comments, mentoring, and knowledge sharing are what create a true community. I particularly agree that welcoming new members and recognizing contributions are simple actions that can have a lasting impact. ActiveRain's future will be strongest when both the platform and its members continue growing together.

Those are great suggestions, and all of them would greatly improve life in the Rain!  I have a feeling that enhancements will never happen since it seems that we should be grateful that the owner merely keeps it in existence for us, haha.

Lots of good suggestions and I can see well thought about as well. At the core I agree what makes the community side work is the people, the technology side may need an upgrade at this stage, but not if it means losing past content.

Wow! I just noticed your points, over 8.5 million! I have less than half of that, and it feels like a full-time passion for me. You are appreciated every day for everything you do: your blogging, commenting, reblogging, welcoming new members, Dolores' recipes, and your magnificent flower photos!

Your mix of insight and optimism makes the future of this space feel a little brighter, and I’m glad you put this out there. Thanks for sharing it and giving all of us something real to chew on :)

Roy, I like how you have organized the blog post - the user-friendliness of the technology, the interactions between members and the future of the platform. When I read the Theme of the Challenge this month, I started thinking about what more I would like to see and do on the platform, besides being a good reader, and occasional blog writer. We'll see if I will come up with ideas worth sharing.

Well done, Roy.  Once upon a time, we had all the tutorials needed for creating good blogs stored in ActiveRain University. That data must still be someplace and polishing it up very little and putting its icon in the legend would definitely help new bloggers.

What a thoughtful post Roy Kelley It takes a village to make magic happen.  Appreciate the ARMS team behind the scenes doing that they can.  Maybe the ai folks like John Palmer or Ed Neuhaus can submit some visuals for a suggested refresh to be forwarded on to Ben

Roy, I enjoyed reading your thoughtful take on ActiveRain’s future. I agree that educational resources are important, but one thing many newer members may not realize is that our community has actually created a tremendous amount of training on its own through the weekly Zoom calls. We've been gathering every Tuesday for more than five years now, sharing blogging tips, technology updates, marketing ideas, industry knowledge and peer-to-peer support. In many ways, we've had more consistent educational opportunities through those Zoom sessions than we did during the years when ActiveRain had front-facing staff!

At the end of the day, I do agree that technology matters, but people create the community. The relationships, encouragement and willingness to help one another have always been ActiveRain's greatest strengths.

Thank you so much for your entry, Roy! 🙏

Roy Kelley - Thank you for your contributions and suggestions. They are all appreciated. The founders of ActiveRain anchored this platform not by boasting or being greedy - but by sharing and encouraging everyone to share! You have certainly done your part over many, many years. Members like Debe Maxwell, CRS and Liz and Bill Spear have done more than their share too! As business owners (active or not), we have all benefited!

Because of AR, I gained wisdom and was able to succeed when my own local Boards could not help without making me pay for more training - most were useless. With the exception of two DFW agents, I did not build strong local relationships. Sure, I got referrals from the locals, but those that gave me business took more than my Broker! And many, many leads cost me money but did not result in success.

Recently I looked over what I spent for local CE, both mandatory and voluntarily, and I realized why I can't retire. What I paid the Brokers and others who offered CE through my community was a small fortune! Comparing AR to my local fees, I can honestly say I got more from ActiveRain.

Roy, I really think you will enjoy weekly Zoom meetings. And you'll get to see the real faces too! I'm sure they would love to see and hear from you too!

My commitment to AR and the friendship I gained was vastly worth it! Seriously, my 21+ years in RE and time on AR was well spent and I remain grateful for people who welcomed me into their lives, just because of ActiveRain. Roy, I am forever grateful to you, Craig Daniels, and ActiveRain Member Support.

Glad this made Carol's Second Chance Saturday.  Well written and so true about commenting as some just look for points and add very little to no value.
