Are You Ready? Ten Questions For You To Answer

If you're thinking, "I don't live in a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, or wildfire zone, so I don't need to worry," I sincerely hope you're right—and that you never have to face one.

A few years ago, a chemical leak south of Houston forced people to leave their homes. They were gone overnight and in some cases longer.

Hurricane season is upon us, and even though it is forecast to be a below-normal season, you never know!  When we returned to Houston, I had no idea we’d spend 3 occasions in a closet due to tornadoes.

Below are 10 questions to ask yourself.

1. DO YOU HAVE A PLAN?

Not just an “It’s in my head plan,” but one that is printed and/or on your phone that you or your family can refer to.

DID YOU KNOW…

It takes, on average, 10-30 seconds for a person to break out of the “freeze response” and start to remember what they need to do.

Having a plan and protocol in place, even rehearsing it with your family, can speed your reaction time.

In the case of a house fire, you may have only two minutes to escape.

2. DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR INSURANCE WILL COVER FOR FIRE, WATER DAMAGES, THEFT, FLOODING??

If the last time you reviewed what your insurance covered was when you purchased your property, now may be a good time to ensure you have the coverage you need.

3. DO YOU KNOW WHAT EMERGENCY SUPPLIES YOU HAVE AND WHERE THEY ARE?

Most of us have a First Aid Kit at home, but have you checked it recently?

Do you have non-perishable food, flashlights, and extra batteries for your devices?

4. HAVE YOU PHOTOGRAPHED AND/ OR VIDEOED YOUR HOME AND ITS CONTENTS LATELY?

Who can remember what we have?

5. HAVE YOU BACKED UP YOUR DEVICES LATELY?

It’s a good idea to have a printed copy of what you might need. Can you remember the number of your nearest relative?  Everything we have is on our devices!

6. HAVE YOU PREPARED YOUR HOME?

If you are in a wildfire area, have you cleared out brush and other items that could be fuel for fires?

If you are in a storm area, have you trimmed trees that could fall on power lines or your home?

7. IS YOUR CAR READY IF YOU HAD TO EVACUATE?

Could you rely on it if you had to leave in an emergency? Does it have a flashlight and anything else you’d need for an emergency?

8. HAVE YOU DOWNLOADED GOVERNMENT AND EMERGENCY ALERT APPS? Here are 5 to consider!

9. HAVE YOU ASSEMBLED YOUR EMERGENCY “BUG OUT” OR “GO” BAG?

Think about what you’d need if you had to be away from home for 2-3 days? Meds, glasses, thumbdrives with your documents?

10. DO YOU HAVE WHAT YOUR PETS WOULD NEED?

You’ll need their medication and proof of vaccinations and shots.

With luck and the law of averages, you won’t have to leave your home or stay in it during an emergency. However, there’s something very peaceful knowing you’re prepared.

Good Thursday morning, Kathy. Many of us do not have good answers for your timely questions. We tend to be too relaxed in our area because we are not usually impacted by hurricanes

Roy Kelley we all get a little too relaxed about it.   And it's not just for those in hurricane areas. I know that you and Chef Dolores are prepared.

You do not want to be all wiped out of supplies...especially toilet paper. That could get ugly.

No kidding Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty   There are good substitutions for paper towels, but nothing for good toilet paper! LOL

Good post Kathy Streib  on preparations for storms, whether they be water or in our case blizzards

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754   Absolutely!   On the rare occasions that it does snow here, Houstonians go nuts!   It's best to stay off the road.  You have to be prepared for being snowed in or your power going out.

Those are 10 questions that everyone should be able to answer, but I doubt many can.  I have never been in a hurricane that I know of, and I hope that I never will be.

Hi Kathy...Below is my LONG response and additional suggestions to your Quiz!

1. Yes   Both on Phones and in writing both in our large gun safe and with a family member in another part of the state.  If the cell towers go down...you may have very limited cell service...or if you lose your phone like my son did in early May. (He got it back because he had the "Find My Phone" app turned on.

2.  Great Advice!  I will add this:  Stay from storm chaser repair companies and lean on local repair if possible and on your local insurance agent & company.  Cheap insurance can also mean cheap response to a claim fulfillment.

3. Yes.  Water and dry food.  These need to be changed on regular basis.  For major power outages...make sure your flashlights are newer and not the old ones with the old style bulb.  We had a rare power outage a few weeks ago in a major windstorm. We have extra miniature flashlights and they work extremely well. In the vehicles as well. If outages are a common occurrence in your area...think about getting a generator.

4. We have done photos at all of our family properties.  Not just in the house...but also the garage and patio and vehicles. Redo every so often.

5. OOPS!  I thought and thought.  I know a couple of my agents numbers and my wife, son, daughter...and not many others. Will make adjustments here...thank you.

6. Yes, except for a large cottonwood that would hit our neighbors house but not ours.  State Farm assured me I am not liable if it would happen.  Neighbors love the tree because it gives them great shade and more privacy and do not want it taken down.

7. My Suburban is fully ready and my wife's Jeep is adequate.  Our older Jeep has gas in it and not much else until hunting season.

8. Thank you for this question...We have not...but will make an effort to fulfill it and thanks for the photo as well!

9. We have a ton of info on our phones that can be accessed whether cell service or not...including phone numbers (in reference to Question 5)

10. No Pets here.  A recent neighborhood fire was first noticed by the folk's neighbor who was then banging on their door that their garage was on fire and had already called 911.  The people all got out and then the husband ran back in because they had a dog inside. All survived and the interior of house was saved but did have smoke damage.  More people die from smoke than the actual flames.  Make sure the garage is safe as well...and the grill is not up against flammables or the home.

Thank you Kathy for this list...and the great reminders and suggestions.  I thought I was doing a great job and now realize I have a lot to improve on!

May I post your Quiz  to my real estate Facebook Page? With acknowledgement of course.

God Bless...Mike

wow Mike McCann Broker - Mach1 Realty great seeing you and thank you for answering!!!   I have my devices backed up and printed copies of important numbers just in case the internet and/or power go out. The best thing we ever did was get a generator!!!!

I've learned something from every hurricane (and tornado) I've been in.

This is an excellent list, I know we do not have anywhere near this preparation should something happen.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 During Hurricane Andrew in FL, we put up our hurricane shutters and headed to Orlando where we had another home. We've also stayed in our home when the winds were 60 + mph and it was no picnic.

Kathy, this is such a timely and important post. Having gone through many hurricanes when living in South Texas, I learned quickly how things can change. Being prepared is essential.

Dr. Paula McDonald Oh yes. At least with hurricanes, you know they're coming. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we have zero hurricanes here this year.

Great checklist! It's easy to assume emergencies happen somewhere else, but being prepared brings peace of mind and helps protect both your family and your home when the unexpected occurs.

Marie-Noelle Metseye you're so right. We all have a bit of the "It can't happen to me" in us, don't we!  When we moved to Leesburg, VA we'd just moved into our home when a string of small tornadoes rolled through.  Who'e have expected tornadoes there?!

Kathy Streib I have to answer no to most of your questions . I do know my insurance covers flood, as when my upstairs neighbor fell asleep and water flooded down into my unit, I was covered, and I stayed in a hotel until it was fixed. We do not usually get hurricanes but I will not say never

Hannah Williams What if your community had a fire?  And you had to leave your home?? Those are things to think about.   I want you to be safe.

Hi George Souto Thanks for your responses. I know you have the whole house generator so you're set there!!!  During one of our storms, the hardest things was that our internet went out!  We had the generator but no one had internet.

Great questions Kathy Streib . Up North here another good one to ask is that if the power goes out during a blizzard how many days of solitude are you prepared for?

If all else fails Kathy, and to add to the plan checklist as an alternative, move to Phoenix metro in Arizona.

Phoenix is low or no on:

1. Earthquakes

2. Hurricanes

3. Tornadoes

4. Nor'easters (snow and ice)

5. Floods

6. Mosquitos

7. Forest fires

8. Tidal waves

9. Humidity

10. Hail

We do have an occasional "Haboob"

Welcome to Arizona

So, add to the plan "Move to Arizona". Just sayin'

Jeff 🙂

Always be prepared is a good motto to live by and you have an excellent list of things people should be aware of and have in place! I grew up with tornadoes but in Alaska we get no warning for earthquakes, long power outages and Volcanoes. Thanks for the great reminders!!

What a thoughtful reminder to slow down and get honest about how prepared we really are, Kathy Streib. Your questions hit with that gentle nudge we all need, and the mix of real stories and practical steps makes the message stick. Thanks for sharing something that might just save a little stress someday.
