Storm Season on Lake Granbury: What Every Lake Homeowner Needs to Know
I didn't learn storm prep for our lake house from a checklist. I learned it standing on the back porch watching a shelf cloud we thought was moving away turn directly toward us. That changes how fast you move.
Lightning on the horizon. Wind picking up fast. We got to work.
Here's my quick storm prep process for lake properties:
**Before the gusts hit:**
- Take down all the windchimes. These gusts are no joke and can rip the chimes from your eaves or even break the cording if they have sun damage.
- Strap down furniture covers and your spa or hot tub lid. Make sure there is no furniture on the dock that isn't strapped down, even if you think it's heavy enough. Trust me, it's probably still going to shift.
- Make sure every umbrella is fully collapsed and secured.
- Walk the porch and yard to remove any loose items that could become projectiles.
That whole process takes about 10-15 minutes or less if your property is already organized. Which is exactly why organization and a consistent routine matter when you own a second home.
Once you're done, you can sit back and watch one of the most spectacular shows Texas has to offer--a full-on lake storm rolling in over the water. It's genuinely beautiful when you're not worried about your patio furniture launching into the neighbor's yard or your patio set on the dock becoming submerged. Make sure there are no kayaks, paddleboards, or life jackets on the dock either! We have lost and saved a few in our years here.
Owning a vacation home on Lake Granbury is one of the best lifestyle investments I've seen. I say that as both an agent and a short-term rental owner myself. It just comes with a little homework.
Thinking about a second home on the lake? I'm always happy to walk you through what ownership actually looks like: the beautiful parts and the practical ones.
