Some Houses Are Just Like People

After all these years in real estate, I've concluded.

Some houses are just like people.

Not just in the way they look, but in their personalities. There are friendly houses. You know the ones. The front door opens, sunlight pours in, and before you've even seen the kitchen, you feel comfortable. They aren't trying to impress anyone. They make you feel welcome.

Then there are the shy houses.

They don't photograph particularly well. Buyers scroll right past them online. But once you walk inside, they slowly reveal their charm. Like a quiet person at a party, they become more interesting the longer you spend with them.

Some homes are old souls.

Usually stone homes, historic homes, or houses built when craftsmanship mattered more than trends. They may creak a little and show a few wrinkles, but they're filled with stories and character. They wear their age proudly.

Then there's the Renaissance house.

This one does everything. Home office. Music room. Workshop. Art studio. Exercise room. Guest suite. It reminds me of those fascinating people who seem to have ten hobbies and somehow excel at all of them.

Some houses are frugal.

Not flashy. Not showy. The kitchen may not be brand new, but the roof is newer. The heating system has been replaced. The windows have been updated. Every dollar has been spent wisely. They remind me of the practical friend who quietly makes good decisions year after year.

Of course, there are a few extravagant houses, the kind with more money than good taste.

Gold fixtures. Massive columns. Chandeliers large enough to be seen from outer space. Every possible upgrade, whether it was needed or not. They definitely make a statement. Whether it's the right statement is open for discussion.

Then there is the perfectionist.

Every pillow is perfectly positioned. Every towel folded identically. Every surface gleams. You almost feel guilty walking through the house. (Except this is the perfect house to list. It's always ready to show.)

And yes, now and then I meet a narcissistic house.

At first glance, it is stunning-fresh paint. Beautiful staging. Wonderful scent. Everything sparkles. Then I start asking questions. How old is the roof? "I don't know." How old is the heating system? "Not sure." What about the water heater? "Don't remember."

Suddenly the personality changes. The house spent all its energy working on appearances and forgot about what was happening underneath. I've met people like that too.

One of my favorites is the reliable friend.

This house isn't trying to win beauty contests. It may not have the newest kitchen or the trendiest finishes. But the roof is solid. The systems are maintained. The owners took care of it year after year.

It's the house equivalent of the friend who always shows up when you need them.

Then there is the romantic.

Window seats. Garden paths. Stone fireplaces. Cozy reading corners. This house wants you to linger a little longer.

The optimist is another favorite.

Even on a cloudy day, it somehow feels bright and cheerful. It just has good energy.

And don't forget the late bloomer.

The house buyers almost skip. The one that doesn't make the strongest first impression. Yet days later, it's the house they can't stop thinking about.

The funny thing is that buyers are a lot like houses.

Some love excitement. Some love stability. Some are practical. Some are dreamers. Some want a grand estate. Others want a cozy cottage.

There is no perfect personality. There is only the right personality.

After thousands of showings, I've learned that houses are a lot like people. Some are charming, some are practical, some are complicated, and some are unforgettable.

The trick isn't finding the perfect house.

It's finding the one whose personality feels like home.

What a wonderful way to describe personalities of houses. Home would be the one with the personality that fits the buyer/owner.

And we sometimes miss when the personality doesn't fit.

Margaret now that you mention it, you are right about the comparison between people and homes.
