Friday Fun…Not For Human Consumption
My weekend recipe post is a day early and a bit different. It is a recipe of sorts, but not for human consumption.
Back Story…
When we lived in Leesburg, VA, I made these when I couldn't get down the 
frozen slope to our feeders. I made suets in the shape of a ball, froze them, then rolled them down the hill to the birds and squirrels. They were a hit!
Today, I make what I call Fat Bombs for our birds. I love doing this because I can use fruit that I already have and not feel like I’m wasting it.
All of the birds love them. In fact, we noticed that our bluebirds, who usually eat only worms and insects, love giving some of the fat bombs to the chicks.
What you need:
-Peanut Butter- doesn’t matter what brand…whatever is on sale. (If you want to really make it a suet, use rendered beef suet or tallow)
-Uncooked oats (optional)
-Bits of fruit-
No more wasting fruit! When you cut an apple, cut small pieces from the apple core!
When you cut a pineapple, mango or any other fruit, cut small pieces from what you don’t eat
-Birdseed mixes (optional)
-Dried fruit such as raisins
-Unsalted nuts
-Cooked and unsauced pasta
-Stale crackers or bread, but only to use as a binder to the fat bomb.
Mix the ingredients in a bowl, then spoon them into a piece of foil. Form the ingredients into a small square or rectangle. Place in the freezer. Grab one when you want to give your birds an extra treat.
This can make a fun project to share with your children.
