This Week…Remembering D-Day and a Special Birthday

Every year on June 6, my post is the same. It is a post to help us remember D-Day, June 1944, Operation Overlord, and the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare.

Much has happened in the 82 years since the Allies, using over 5,000 ships and landing craft, landed 150,000 troops on five beaches of Normandy: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.

The facts are staggering, and so are the individual stories. One man told of carrying a rifle and trying not to punch a hole in the glider he was in. He also had a typewriter to record events of the day. Read more stories here

Think about it…all they did without the technology we have today!

Last year, I shared a surprising fact: a dress rehearsal for the landing was conducted about five weeks before the actual event. Oh, and by the way...live ammunition was used!

While I may not be a student of history, D-Day has always fascinated me. I remain in awe of the sheer scope of the operation and the meticulous planning required to make it happen.

Perhaps most remarkable of all, D-Day's success was not the result of any one individual or nation, but of the coordinated efforts, sacrifice, and determination of countless Allied forces working toward a common goal.

***********************************************************

This day is also the heavenly birthday of my father, Henry. Bear with me as I repeat the story of his D-Day.

On that day, my father, a photographer in the Army Air Corps,  asked his Captain if he could have the day off since it was his birthday.

His response was Henry…you’re not going to want to miss this day.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Dad.

Good morning, Kathy. Happy Heavenly Birthday to your Dad! D-Day was indeed a historic tour de force! Sadly, I think many people no longer really know much about it and to many it's just ancient history.

I agree with you, Nina Hollander, Broker  You and I and the rest of the Baby Boomers were closer in time to  this event and the Vietnam war. I don't want our history to be forgotten or changed.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... also, at our ages we had family and family friends who served in WWII and even in WWI (my grandmother was a nurse on the Russian front in WWI). We didn't see it as ancient history.

Good morning Kathy. I echo the comments of Nina Hollander, Broker. Those who gave it all on that Day are likely turning over in their graves at the state of our country today unfortunately! History in schools should be taught. The facts, not tan interpretation. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin I couldn"t agree more. I would love to hear my Uncle Charlie give his take on the state of the country.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to your dad! And as for D-Day, I still have a voice mail message from my husband when he visited Omaha Beach a decade or so ago. The visit was very moving.

Kat Palmiotti that must have been such a special trip. I remember the Delray Beach St Patrick's Day several years ago. The parade marshals were WWII vets.  What an honor to see them. Everyone came out to cheer them on and to thank them.

Educating. Encouraging. Serving.

Good morning Kathy,

I always look forward to your D-Day post, the photo of your dad is wonderful, such a wonderful smile. Sadly so many of our younger generations don't know and are not being taught this historic and remarkable event. The coordinated efforts, sacrifice, and determination of so many Allied forces, working together toward a common goal made this a historic feat!

I love reading the story of your dad and his captain every year, Kathy! What a remarkable perspective he had as an Army Air Corps photographer on such a monumental day. Thank you for sharing him with us.

82 years ago today these brave men, who saw the bullets flying at them and the bombs bursting, ran up a hill and crushed the spirit of the German armies. The Ronald Reagan speech is still the best.

When we visited Normandy we went to a bridge that was where the first British troops landed to capture the bridge to stop reinforcements and also to make sure those on the beaches could make their way inland. They landed via gliders that were released well out over the Channel so that no engine noise would alert the Germans. They achieved their  mission. Amazingly the bridge was very small, it was a wonder that it was so important.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I got a lump in my throat just reading your comment. Think about the coordination it took among the Allied Forces to do what they did.  My dad said they were issued foreign currency in case they were shot down. In come cases they were given a posion tablet. He told them to keep the currency because there was no way he could pass as someone from Europe. He'd keep the tablet.

Thank you Brian England It's a shame that history is being forgotten or altered. And you know what they say about people forgetting their history.

My dad never talked much about his tour in France. Then one day, a few years before he passed, he shared it all. He landed on the beach in Normandy on Day 3. The stories he shared weren't what you might think. The French came out to meet them and walk with them as they moved through city after city. Welcoming the soldiers into their homes for food and thanking them for being there. It was quite heartwarming.

What a powerful mix of history and heart, Kathy Streib. And it’s amazing how you brought both together with such ease. The way you wove those D-Day moments with your father’s story hit me in the best way, and it left me thinking about the courage tucked into ordinary days. Thanks for sharing this reminder of what people carried, did, and gave so the rest of us could stand here today.
