Saturday Soundness ~ Farm vs. Pharm

I so enjoy visiting local Farmer's Markets. Even when traveling, I like to see these events out and to support local farmers and artisans. What I am noticing in our area is that there are fewer real farmers out there anymore. This is troublesome on many fronts.

Gardening and small farming take a great deal of effort and planning. Additionally, the cost of land keeps many from taking up these endeavors like they once did. We need our local farmers, so make sure to support them when you can.

Here is a quick list of fresh food and herbs that can be used to bring vitality and health to you through natural methods:

Farm Fresh Traditionally Supports Common Pharmaceuticals
Garlic Cardiovascular health, immune support Blood pressure/cholesterol medications
Ginger Nausea, digestive comfort Anti-nausea medications
Turmeric Healthy inflammatory response Anti-inflammatory medications
Peppermint Digestive comfort Antispasmodics, digestive aids

Elderberry Immune support Cold and flu symptom treatments
Cinnamon Healthy blood sugar support Diabetes medications
Oregano Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties Antimicrobials

Lavender Relaxation and stress reduction Anti-anxiety medications

Good afternoon Paula,

I agree there are fewer really in the business of farming and that is not good a good thing, the same as ranchers. We need to be careful because the organic way of getting these natural ingredients are far better for you than what big Pharm can offer you.

It really is noticeable, Dorie. Quite concerning.

Paula, I did bring thyme and rosemary with me from Denver, and love spices.   Know they are beneficial to our health.

That is great, Joan. I bet you will be able to grow lots of great herbs in Portugal!

HI Paula- More and more people I know have some kind of garden in their backyard. (Look at Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! )  My cousin and her husband have a productive one and share their extra eggplant.   I've tried growing rosemary but did not have much luck.

We had Caprese Salad Croissants tonight for dinner, Kathy. The tomatoes and basil was from the garden with a side of fresh cucumber. Yum!

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! that sounds so good!

The key to growing herbs is that they don't like their feet to be too wet. Containers are best, and allowing them to dry out between waterings is important.

We are natural gardeners, Paula and understand the many benefits of growing our own food and herbs. Our pantry is being filled right now and by the end of growing season, we will eat very well for the next year!

Yes, Wanda. There is nothing more satisfying than getting your hands in the dirt!

Good morning Paula. You are correct there are fewer farmers with road side stands. We liv win Andrea where they used to be prevalent. We moved in and they moved on. A matter of bad luck for us and good timing for them to sell to home builders, the new breed of farmer oil our area. Have to study your list . Thanks. Enjoy your day.

This makes me so sad, Wayne. It really is noticeable. Hopefully, others will attempt their hand with the small, backyard garden.

Let food be thy medicine is something that I live by, and I don't want to ever take a prescription medication.  I feel so bad for those who do because they will never truly be healthy.  It even frustrates me to see my Dad take so many pills, but he is close to 80 years old, haha.

You are on the right track, Brian. Sadly, so many have been lulled into the belief that taking pill after pill will help them. In reality, those pills are creating side effects that require more pills to deal with.

Quite a few things on out future garden list (visiting the new home site this week so I'll finally have a better idea of how much space we have...or don't)!  We bought some tomatoes and corn from a local market yesterday.  The small farmer tomatoes taste so much better than the big box store versions that seem more about shelf life and less about taste.

Those who have only tasted grocery store tomatoes have no idea how vine ripened tomatoes taste. The first ripe tomato each season is cause for celebration! I have a while to wait for that, so I'm envious of you buying them already.

Hi Paula,
I couldn't agree more. Farmers' markets are about more than fresh food—they help preserve local agriculture, small businesses, and community connections. There is something special about meeting the people who grow our food.

I love fresh food!  And thankfully there is a lot to be found in our area.  As for gardening, not me deal anymore.   Other than a few pots  in our alcove, when I can again.  I love fresh home grown tomatoes.  Great post Paula!

Thanks for the good information, Paula. I love the idea of taking care of issues with natural food and spices. The older I get, the more anti-pharm I am.
