Some FUNNY Observations

By
Industry Observer DRE# ER40011786

Living in the central part of Quarteira, parking is hard to find, so you will be driving around and around for a while.     I think because of this, the trash trucks come at 11 or 11:30 pm every night.

With my first night's sleep, in the early dawn hours, I heard some SCREECHING, and had my bedroom door closed.  I went running out into the living room to see if the kitties were OK.   OHHHH, was just sea gulls.   We didn't have this noise in Aurora....LOL.

Going for breakfast and coffee, I get such a kick of when the locals order a pastry with their beer.    AND, almost every table does it!

After I got moved into my apartment, I went to the grocery store, since NOTHING was in the frig, and started to wonder if halibut, perch, scallops or trout were available.   I looked, and also went to the meat market, didn't find any of these, just fish I haven't heard of before.  Guess I have some trying to do!

Most apartments have at least a washer, some have a dryer, and some have a machine that will do both.  I had only a washer in the Airbnb and also here.   SO, have to hang your clothes out.   SO funny with hanging your undergarments out.   I bought a drying rack, not doing that.  BUT did hang my shirts and towels out today.   I would worry on windy days about losing some of your laundry!   OR, one of the clips let loose, and now you have dirty laundry AGAIN.

I am sure there will be more, I will make notes!

Good morning, Joan... you wouldn't catch me hanging my laundry on an outside line either... who needs the dirt, the sun bleaching, etc. In Russia virtually no one has a clothes dryer because the buildings weren't built to vent... everyone dries on a rack inside their apartments. Drives me nuts.

Nina Hollander, Broker when I walked up to this building, and saw how many residents were hanging out their undergarments I cringed.  NO WAY.   I did hang a couple of shirts, but have a drying rack inside.

Good morning Joan. Must say, it is easier for me to do your discoveries and changes vicariously. Pastry with beer in the morning would not be for me. Do others have coffee,  like you, instead? No dryer? My wife would say what part of  "NO" don't you understand?  What are the next experiences? I for one am staying tuned in.

Wayne Martin I don't drink beer ANYTIME, especially not for breakfast.   Some have coffee along side the beer, it is just plain strange.   The dryer thing is a tough one, but I didn't have a choice, this apartment doesn't have one.  Different way of living here.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner - I admire your sense of adventure and willingness to compromise. A cup of coffee beside the beer is just plain strange. By the way many living in high priced condos in downtown Chicago do not have laundry facilities in their units. Some do not have facilities own their buildings.

Wayne Martin now THAT I couldn't do, at least have to own a washer in my unit.

What a fun read, Joan! A pastry with a morning beer is definitely a unique way to start the day—when in Rome, right? I'm completely with you on the laundry situation, too. An indoor drying rack is definitely the safest bet unless you want to chase your shirts down the street on a windy day! Enjoy the new experiences!

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 just because the locals do, doesn't mean I will even try it.  Don't like beer.  I like wine, but not in the morning either!

One of my favorite clients was from Poland. He drank beer over cereal and then he drank all day.  I don't think I ever saw him without a can in his hand.  He said the water in Poland was bad and that was how he grew up, always drinking beer instead of water.

A lot of these small towns have markets, where you can find fish, in Portugal a lot of places sell Bacalao dried cod. I was told many Portuguese wives have 365 recipes for Bacalao.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I had bacalou last time I was here, and had never tried cod before.  I really liked it.

It is a lot of work and planning ahead as you need to soak it in either milk or water to soften it.

Hi Joan- what  a hoot!!!  I think it's exciting that you're experiencing these new customs  as well as learning to live without a dryer. I wonder what people think of us crazy Americans and our customs.
