Motivational Monday…Nurture and Treasure Them

Many friends will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends leave footprints in your heart.

Eleanor Roosevelt

When I read that today is Best Friends Day, I thought about the many friends I’ve had through the years. I also thought about how true it is that as we get older, that number diminishes.

My best friend is someone I’ve known for 40+ years. I placed her in three jobs and, in doing so, also introduced her to her husband.  We see this wonderful couple at least every week now, but sadly, my dear friend has Alzheimer's.

We are still the best of friends, but those memories are locked in her special place. I made a book of pictures to help her as the disease progresses.

Friendships matter throughout our lives, but they become especially important as we grow older.

Life changes such as career moves, divorce, the loss of loved ones, raising children, and simply following different paths can all affect our relationships.
Sometimes, however, friendships fade for a much simpler reason: they are neglected and left untended.

Friendships have to be nurtured. Let me tell you about a group of childhood friends who have kept their special bond together for over 65 years.

Six ladies I knew in grade school called themselves “The Sisters.” In high school, they had dinner once a week in one of the sisters’ homes. They maintained their friendship through college, marriages, and children. They continued taking annual Sisters trips, and their friendship is strong to this day.

It’s not too late to make new friends.

What about the people you meet when you pursue your interests or hobbies?

The people we meet could be future friends, or at the very least acquaintances. Let it bloom naturally. You never know!

Friendships come in all shapes and sizes…and VIRTUALLY! Think about the people we’ve met here…most virtually and some in person!  Now, thanks to FaceTime and Zoom, we can have friendships throughout the country.

If you have a chance, how about calling your best friend today?!

Good morning, Kathy... sadly the couple of people I would consider "best" friends have passed away and I've yet to "replace" their place in my life.

Nina Hollander, Broker  We are both of that age.  They can never be replaced but if we're lucky, we'll find a new or different friendship to help fill the space.

Kathy Streib good morning, Kathy. I keep saying I know I'm getting older and older as my Christmas card and birthday card lists get shorter with each passing year.

Yes, friendships do need to be tended if they are to continue. Sometimes one person, for whatever reason, isn't interested in continuing and that's okay too - people come in and out of our lives for all sorts of reasons.

I agree Kat Palmiotti Because we've moved around a lot, I have friendships in those places but miss the long-term friendships of having linved in one place.

Good morning Kathy. As I age I lose those who have gained a place in my heart. Luckily my best friend of just over 62 years and I talk almost daily. And many come and go, it is just what happens. So sorry your bestie is slipping away. You will always have the memories. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin you are incredibly lucky to have your friend that you speak to almost daily.  And, I'm sure you both nurtured that friendship.

I have lost so many  bests that I am fearful of giving that title to anyone else as it seems to not end well. I do give all a big smile however.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 that's tough, isn't it?   One of our friends passed away suddenly on Christmas Eve many years ago. It was hard.

Hi Kathy,
Life evolves, and we often get pulled in different directions. Some friendships are meant to be forever, and others are temporary. You're right, lasting friendships (regardless of the level) need to be nurtured.

Kathy, the picture book is such a loving idea, and even when memories become harder to reach, the comfort of a familiar friend and the feelings that come with that friendship can still mean so much!

This is a beautiful and incredibly moving reflection for Best Friends Day, Kathy. Your photo book idea for your dear friend is such a deeply loving, compassionate gesture—even when memories fade, the heart absolutely still recognizes the comfort and bond of a true friend. Thank you for the reminder that great friendships are treasures to be fiercely protected and nurtured.

Kathy my wife's best friend was her Maid of Honor at our wedding almost 52 years ago, and they are still best friends to this day.  Even though my wife is on the East Coast, and her best friend is on the West Coast, they still get together fairly often.

George Souto I love that. I have a friend I've known all through school. I met her when we met in Sunday School. We've taken different paths, though.
