Camping in Rexford Bench Campground, MT

As I mentioned in my last camping blog, my husband and I are going to attempt to take quite a few one-night camping trips to nearby locations this summer. One night means we won't miss any days in the garden and greenhouse, but also gives us some time to explore and play.

I thought it would be fun to provide an overview of the campgrounds we visit. I'm also going to make clear we aren't really roughing it. We have a self-sufficient 19+ foot camper-van with all the amenities we need - a kitchen, bathroom, shower, queen sized bed, heat, air conditioning, solar, etc.  That being said, I'll provide information about whether the campground being reported on is good for tent and RV camping as well.

Rexford Bench Campground

Rexford Bench is located in Rexford, Montana, a small town in Northwest MT, about six miles from the Canadian border. The campground is on the shorts of Lake Koocanusa, a 90 mile long reservoir lake that has shores in both Canada and the United States. The lake provides boating and fishing opportunities, with rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, whitefish, burbot, kokanee and some brook trout in streams that drain into the lake.

The campground has 54 sites, 35 of which are first-come first-served sites. The remaining sites can be reserved. All sites are equipped with a table and campfire ring with grill. There are also several flush toilets available, as well as drinking water spigots. In addition there are is a pump out station available at the campground. There are no utility hookups but all roads and parking surfaces are paved and Verizon cell service worked well.  The cost to stay on a site is $24 per night and you can RV camp or tent camp.

In addition to fishing, the campground has several hiking trails which include several benches along the way, and one trail with a wooden swing overlooking the water.

We visited this campground in the middle of the week in June, and it was sparsely occupied. There were only two other campsites in the loop we were in that were occupied so needless to say it was a very quiet and peaceful at that time.

That being said, this campground is only a mile from Abayance Bay, a concert venue and marina on the water. The campground hosts let us know that once the concerts get started in late June, the campground is always full. If that's the case, you may want to use the reserve-able spots instead of the first-come, first-served if you're planning to attend a show.

So did we enjoy our time at Rexford Bench Campground?

Yes, we did. We did some hiking, read our books, had a yummy dinner and nice campfire, played some backgammon and relaxed. I would definitely recommend this campground if you're in the area.

Good morning Kat. I am going to enjoy your series on campgrounds. My wife is not a fan. Once we were going to go camping with friends and I even arranged for a large camper with all the features. She still said no! Your area at this time of year is perfect. Look forward to more. Thanks! Enjoy your day.

Thank you Wayne Martin for your comment! I did tent camping as a child, and in my twenties. Now I need more comfort! Luckily there are a lot of options for spending time in the woods in relative comfort!

Campig and communing with nature can be fun, but not for me. That first photo seems to show a lot of lost water to the lake

Yes the water was low Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 - maybe not enough snow this winter (in that area)

Kat Palmiotti yes, it does, Kat! I tried (once) when I was a Girl Scout in the 1950's. Never felt the need to repeat the experience!

Kat, sounds like a very fun night of "camping", and those views are spectacular.  I can imagine the campground is full in the summer months.

What a great way to spend you summer - exploring campgrounds.  We used to do quite a bit of camping with the kids but that's been awhile.Always something new to explore and see.   BTW the pass I saw the Mama Moose and 2 babies was in MT.  It might have been called Bear Tooth Pass?  Gorgeous all the way up and down into the park.

I don't think we've been on that road although I'm sure we will some day Anna "Banana" Kruchten - I'm glad you saw a mama and her babies!
