June Challenge: Where I Hope We Go and How I Hope to Help

For the past eighteen years, ActiveRain has played a huge role in my life.  When I began my staging career, I wandered into this site and never left.

The ActiveRain webinars taught me how to write a blog and introduced me to SEO. Because of what I learned here, people found me through my internet presence.

~For this platform’s future, I would love to see the return of the energy, attendance, and sheer volume of information shared that were the foundation on which this community was built.

~Commenting and responding to comments are what bind us. Through the years, commenting on posts has decreased substantially. Some members never interact with others, while some do not comment on the posts of others unless it is reciprocated. Some write blogs, and that’s it. I have no idea if they read our comments or not.

Commenting is an integral part of what makes ActiveRain work. If not, we might as well be talking to a brick wall. It is how we learn how our thoughts may or may not have impacted others.

Commenting is also how we get to know others here. I’ve told this story before, but when I started blogging here, I noticed one member in particular. His comments were always thoughtful and showed he’d actually read the post. I set out to read this member’s posts and find out more about who he was. His name: Roger Mucci (some of you remember him)

How would I improve the commenting and interaction here?  Members have written posts about its importance, but we can’t make someone interact.

On occasion, I’ve read requests from members for referrals. That’s one of the perks of the community; however, agents want to know who you are before referring a client to you.

~My vision is through “older” eyes, and by that I mean it is colored by my length of time here. I would love to get input from new members to the community to discover why they’re here and what they would hope to gain by being here. What I’ve observed is that people join, write some truly interesting posts, then poof…they’re gone.

What are they not getting here? Is it something we can implement or offer?

Years ago, I tried calling new members to welcome them to ActiveRain, but had little to no success. I think I was missing the Margaret Rome touch!

~For now, I will continue to blog, comment, and interact with and support other members. Because I’m retired, my goals are less about points and more about being a part of the community.

How can I improve my blogging techniques and keep people engaged? That is something I’m constantly focused on. I hope members enjoy what I write about. What I know is that this exercise in blogging is helping to keep my dendrites firing.

Good morning, Kathy... I believe that what's missing today and has been for some year in the Rain is the education we got from Bob Stuart on how to blog. That's where I learned to put things into practice. And I think it will be a hard road to change participating and quality of blog posts without that kind of assistance.

Nina Hollander, Broker  I do miss the Webinars but we're learning from the Zoom calls as well.

This is a thoughtful entry into this month's challenge! How to get people who aren't involved more involved is definitely the question that needs answering. I don't have an answer at the moment!

Kat Palmiotti Thank you!  You know the phrase: You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink it?  That's the same with ActiveRain. Some people may have no interest in participating.

Great blog Kathy!!! Yes we need to get back to sharing rather than self promotion ourselves, our listings, our local market conditions!!!

For this platform’s future, I would love to see the return of the energy, attendance, and sheer volume of information shared that were the foundation on which this community was built.

Hi Kathy,
It boggles my mind why we are getting so many new sign-ups (whom many of us welcome), but they never interact. They don't "get" what this platform really is all about. In my Welcome message, I ask them what they are hoping to gain here and invite them to our Zoom meetings. Crickets.  They simply do not know what they are missing.

Carol Williams We've all run into that. And some may be content to post here and that's it.

There is an element missing and for the new members it is the interaction that makes it all a positive. Some will post but they seem to not want to interact and for those that are trying to relieve the payments, commenting is a quick way to accumulate points.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 I agree.  This may not be for everyone. I do wonder who we might miss because they feel left out.

Kathy, it would be interesting to see what the bloggers have to say, why they post, but never interact with others.  I too wonder if they ever read the comments.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner  I wonder that as well.  When I comment on posts and the blogger doesn't respond I wonder if they ever read the comment.

Hi, Kathy Streib. Here's a thought I mulling over in my head:

Once a week, each of us ActiveRainers could pick at least three new members and leave a warm, thoughtful comment on their first posts. A simple nudge from a seasoned member can be the difference between someone staying or drifting away. This requires a new category of posts under the Real Estate Blog Posts banner, and in the Type: section where it provides 'All Types', 'Featured', 'Following', add in “Posts from New Members.

Thoughts?

Kathy Streib Love this post especially the part about commenting to a brick wall . Eighteen years has it been that long since you and I have been on AR  ? You are the best Kathy always calling and contacting others when they are sick .You are the Sunshine of Active Rain. I could go on and on about all you do .. Great entry

Maybe we could convince them that blogging here is good practice for writing attention-getting posts on their own websites.

I don't know. Some people just say "I can't write."

Marte Cliff Good point. You may not know, judging by my current writing, but blogging has helped me write and to organize my thoughts. I continue working on it...as they say, I'm a work in progress.

Hey....here's a thought....that would be a great post coming from you.

Lauren Williams, CPO,CVOP  understandable. I think back when SEO was a "thing" and AR ranked high for SEO, that may be why agents post listings here.

Yes it's been mentioned time and time again and sometimes I think what's missing is a Community Mover and Shaker like Kerrie! It's been twenty years (almost) and it's been a ride I never thought would be so great.  I am grateful for it all and I do wish newbies would be the 'build relationships and network  part Kathy!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I have to agree about Kerrie. She was the glue and cheerleader all rolled into one.

Good evening Kathy Streib,

A great entry into the June Challenge! There are so many webinars out there on how to write posts and gain readership but look at what some of our members have introduce us to and gone out of their way to show us what is new and working now! Bob and Kerrie were great but that was then and now its all different! Look forward and not backward...keep on doing what you do best,,letting the world out there know there are people who care!❤️

What I find with many agents, they try something for a brief period , such as farming a neighborhood. They mail it once or twice don't get any leads and they give up. That's probably the same with blogging they do it a few times , no response and poof... they're gone.

Kathy Streib - That "energy, attendance, and sheer volume of information," was the juice that kept me interested! Plus, it was never boring. There was a lot of good, clean fun in those old days which was really important to help build relationships! For about two years I tried to get on AR and didn't know how! Then, once I got to be a member, I didn't know how to insert photographs. Once I learned, I was camera crazy! Also, when I learned about RAINCAMP, I signed up for the one in Houston. I drove all the way there because I talked to Kerrie who was very encouraging! Once I got to Houston and met Kerrie, Bob Stewart, and so many others I was hooked like fish who wouldn't let go. Also, I never wanted to swim away and look elsewhere for education and friendship. There really was no better place to learn about real estate than ActiveRain and the People were GREAT!

We had a lot of funny characters, like Roger!  And of course, Sharon Tara played a significant role in' making sure, everyone was dressed for just about any occasion for AR Challenges!

We have all learned a lot about AR and what it can do for us. Now, here we are in the AI World and I have to say, you did a GREAT job on your FEATURE Photo! It's perfect! Kathy, you truly ARE an inspiration and you're never out of style. You're in step with whatever is trending and you do it well!

I really enjoyed reading your blog post for this June 2026 Challenge! I am so thankful for Debe Maxwell, CRS who stepped in to host with Lew Corcoran. They are doing a great job, and the entries have been very interesting!!!
