June 2026 AR Challenge regarding ActiveRain and me

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with eXp Commercial, Referral Divison RRE-BRO-LIC-75443

This month's ActiveRain challenge is called "Ask not what AR Support can do for you - but what can you do for ActiveRain?"  Specifically, the question to be answered is what can we do to help make ActiveRain even stronger?

I struggled a bit with this question, because I can't think of anything new I personally could do to assist making this site stronger. I write posts (although not as many as I have in the past), I comment on other's posts, I welcome new members, I participate in the AR Zoom calls, I help find speakers for the AR Zoom calls (although not as many as I should perhaps), I... hmm, I may already have my answer of what I could do better!

Of course, my thoughts then went to the actual platform. Is there anything that can be done there to help improve the quality of posts, interactions and member involvement?

I think the site has been working very well in terms of being able to post and comment without error messages. We have had times in the past where that simple functionality was flawed. It isn't now. And whenever changes are made in a system, there is the potential for other things to not work. So I wouldn't suggest any big changes be made to the actual ActiveRain system, but I have one suggestion for what should be a very small tweak.

Feature Photos

The only posts that are currently featured are those with a feature photo. If the featured photo becomes a requirement, perhaps some of the new members who actually write interesting posts would be featured. That might get new members more interested in sticking around, and would result in more conversations with different people. That's the only system related change I would suggest at this time.

Use of AI

One other thing I'm struggling with is the use of AI in ActiveRain posts and comments. When ~50% of the posts are all written in the same format, with the same typeface, and the same bulleted list formats and the same tone, posts become boring. And if posts are boring, fewer people will interact with them. In addition, if AI is writing the posts, who is the writer? Part of the benefit of ActiveRain has been hearing the voices of those who were members. What is their area truly like? What excites them? How do they treat clients? Getting to know the person behind the post disappears when the members aren't actually writing their own posts.

Further, when people use AI to write their comments, that also takes away from the interaction here. Some of the time, even the instructions they provided to AI when asking AI to write a comment are included in the cut/paste response. In my opinion, that makes the comment no better than a drive-by comment where you know the person didn't even read the post they're commenting on.

I'm not saying people who write on ActiveRain shouldn't use AI. If a writer is using AI to edit/make suggestions on something they already wrote, that's one thing. Or if they're using AI to suggest topics to write about, that's fine. But if giving AI instructions like "write a comment that sounds like me regarding this post," and then cutting/pasting the entire post into AI and then cutting/pasting the result, that's not cool. Same with posts. And if all of your posts or comments look and sound the same, that's not doing anyone any favors.

And that's not what ActiveRain is all about. It's about the personal interactions, building relationships, getting to know who people are, learning new things about your area and your business. That doesn't happen when every post sounds the same.

Summary

So to wrap this all up, in terms of what I can do to help ActiveRain, I will make a point to write more posts and to find more speakers for our Zoom calls. And I will continue to help in any other way I can.

As for my vision for the actual platform, I would make the feature photos a requirement of posting, and I would suggest we find a way to eliminate the overt use of AI to write entire posts and comments. I don't know the answer to that latter suggestion in terms of how to do that, but there's got to be a way.

Make ActiveRain Stimulating Again (#MASA).

Thank you to Debe Maxwell, CRS and Lew Corcoran for hosting, and Patricia Feager for the idea.

Kat Palmiotti so besides the reason you already identified, another could be to encourage other industry professionals you are in contact with to join AR.

That's a good idea that I've tried in the past George Souto - but no one seemed interested in a platform that included writing. The write (right) people would say yes!

Hello Kat and great information in your blog to share.  I know I am trying to daily follow 5 to 6 new members and tell them we can learn from them and help them.  I then try to comment on there blogs and go back to January and the ones the blog I comment on them.  The ones that only blog 3 or 4 times i sent them a message to keep blogging.  I try to do things behind the scenes

Good afternoon Kat,

Great entry in the June contest! You bring up some good ideas because I see some never commenting on others posts and when they do it it's copy and paste and no depth to a comment. We do need to see some new bloggers posts featured which I see some are, just need more. It's still important to have our posts from our Saturday and Sunday series always featured as its a great way to find some excellent posts to read!

Hi Kat - I couldn’t agree more with what you said . What’s interesting wI’ve noticed some new members have Feature photos while some don’t. I’ve wondered if it’s because they read your Starting Out At ActiveRain post or someone told them.

i feel the same as you do about AI .
I love it for generating images and do use it to help clean up a paragraph when I can’t get it to sound right.
But the AI comments stump me.

Kathy Streib - someone posted a comment on one of my blogs and the first sentence were the instructions to AI. I don't remember exactly what it said, but was basically instructing AI to come up with a comment in a certain tone. Sigh.

To be honest, I think you do a great job in the Rain, especially for someone who is no longer active in real estate.  You write wonderful posts, you interact with others, and you are always supportive!  It doesn't have to be a daily thing.

Amen and Bravo to this Kat Palmiotti

Gosh, I know immediately when a post is written by AI, and I confess, I do not read or comment on those posts.  Frankly, it is insulting to me.

The same goes for the drive-by cut-and-paste comments.

You're speaking my thoughts outloud, Kat. When every post and comment sounds the same, the art of connecting with the actual person is completely lost. We don't need or want more automated filler; we want more real conversations (don't we?). Thanks for addressing this!

As Will Hamm says -- behind the scenes -  You are very active in this space and are greatly appreciated.  Stimulating #MASA should be an update for your Starting Out instructions.  I'm with Kathy Streib on this and believe those who read Starting out gain more than they know in the beginning

Feature photos often help tell the story and can be impactful. Writing about diverse subjects can pique a reader's interest but attention spans are short, mine is, anyway. AI is on the rise and a few members are using it exclusively and it's ok and their way.

Your ideas to be more helpful on the AR platform can make a positive difference, Kat!

Kat Palmiotti - Congratulations on your FEATURE - it's well-deserved!

Thank you for your thoughtful response to this June 2026 Challenge. Also, you will always be remembered on AR because of your commitment and dedication to making ActiveRain better because of your willingness to share and try new ways to be interesting. By now, just about everybody knows your name!

You sure have a lot of followers! I'm happy you're on AR and give so much of your time and good advice to all. Because of you ActiveRain is even better.

You made a good point about the Feature Photo. I remember how foreign the idea seemed to me at first. But once I learned, it was fun and made my posts even more interesting. Perhaps, new folks don't know how to add the photos and that would be a great blog post to help educate those who do not know how easy it is - once you know how!

As for AI - I also noticed it can be overused which sounds more like plagiarism to me. Perhaps this would make a good ZOOM session - not to embarrass anyone, but to share some proper etiquette when using AI for blog posts and comments too.

I like your all your ideas very much!

If a post is otherwise feature worthy, but lacking the feature photo, ARMS can add one if a contact form is sent to the ARMS account.  It's not a primary function, but something we can do as time allows.

100% right on about AI and making a feature photo a requirement. Many people think in pictures otherwise why would book covers have such interesting graphics? I can usually tell if AI is the author of the comment or blog post.  I may be using AI for graphics only. The words I write are 100% me. No AI here.

Jun 16, 2026 06:28 AM

Leanne Smith - I pick books up at the library, first because of the cover. So yes, I totally agree!

My only exception is a favorite author and then the cover provides some insight but is not a decision making criterion.

Jun 16, 2026 06:47 AM
Kat Palmiotti

I pick it up because of the cover, and then I read the synopsis. I put a lot of books back on the shelf immediately. Then if the synopsis is interesting, I read the first few pages. If I want to know what happens yet, that book is coming home with me Leanne Smith !

I have a love/hate relationship with AI. I'm not going to link to it and spam your comments, but I just wrote an article that shows AI logging into ActiveRain, writing a post and making images for the post. But I had no idea people use AI for comments! That is...not great.
