Before you start looking at listings. Before you drive up Highway 18 for the first time with your spouse to see what the mountain feels like. Before you fall in love with the pine trees and the lake and the quiet Saturday mornings.
That is the first thing I tell anyone who is seriously considering a move to the San Bernardino Mountains. Not which neighborhoods to look at. Not what the market looks like. Not how lake rights work.
Watch Duty first. Everything else second.

September 2024: The Line Fire
On September 5th, 2024 the Line Fire was deliberately ignited in Highland, California.
It did not stay in Highland.
Within days it had consumed over 23,000 acres and was pushing hard into the San Bernardino Mountains. The heatwave that week was relentless. The fire was moving faster than most people expected.
My senior parents were visiting us at our home in Lake Arrowhead. We had pets. The whole family was there.
I was watching Watch Duty.
On September 10th the notifications started changing. Evacuation warnings expanding into our communities. Twin Peaks. Lake Arrowhead. Cedar Glen. Crestline. Recommended evacuation. Not mandatory. Recommended.
I looked at my parents. I looked at our pets. I looked at the app.
We did not debate it.
We packed what we needed, loaded the car, and drove down the mountain to Rosarito Beach in Baja California. We stayed until the warnings were lifted.
Watch Duty kept us informed every single day we were gone. Updates on the fire's movement. Changes in evacuation zone status. The moment the all clear came we knew it before most people.
The Line Fire ultimately burned over 38,000 acres and threatened more than 36,000 structures across the mountain communities.
We were already gone before it got close. Because of an app that cost nothing and took five minutes to set up.

You might think it is nice to have somewhere to go. A place to land when you have to leave.

What Watch Duty Actually Does
Watch Duty is a free app built specifically for wildfire monitoring in the western United States. It was created by firefighters and first responders who understood that the public needed better real time information than what traditional news coverage could provide.
Here is what it gives you.
Real time fire perimeter maps updated as incidents develop. You can see exactly where a fire is and where it is moving relative to your property and your community.
Official evacuation zone status. Watch Duty pulls directly from official incident command information. When a zone goes from watch to warning to order you see it immediately.
Push notifications customized to your location. You set your address and the communities you want to monitor. The app notifies you the moment anything changes in those areas.
Multiple incident tracking. During active fire season there can be multiple incidents across the mountains simultaneously. Watch Duty lets you monitor all of them from one screen.
How to Set It Up
Download Watch Duty from the App Store or Google Play. It is free.
Open the app and add your home address as a monitored location. Add any other communities you care about. Lake Arrowhead. Blue Jay. Twin Peaks. Crestline. Running Springs. Skyforest. Add them all.
Go into your phone settings and make sure Watch Duty is allowed to send you notifications. This is the step most people skip. An app that cannot notify you is useless at 2am when a fire starts moving.
Then set it and forget it. It runs in the background. You will not think about it until the moment you need it. And when that moment comes you will be very glad it is there.

I am not writing this to scare you away from the mountain. I am writing this because I love living here and I want you to come in with open eyes.
