Growing My First Peas… and Learning Something Unexpected

I’ll be the first to admit it: I am not a pea person.

Never have been. Childhood dinners at my mother’s table taught me that peas were something you politely pushed around your plate, not something you savored. But my beau loves them, so this spring I decided to grow a small batch in the garden - mostly for him, not for me.

Well, today was harvest day. I picked those plump little pods, opened one out of curiosity, and popped a pea into my mouth. And let me tell you… DELICIOUS. Sweet, crisp, bright - nothing like the peas of my past. It turns out there are many varieties of peas, and the one I chose is apparently the one my taste buds have been waiting for all these years. Note to self: plant this exact variety again.

As I stood there snacking straight from the vine, it struck me how much this mirrors real estate. People often think a house is a house - just like peas are peas - until they discover the right variety for them. Maybe it’s a cozy Cape in Bellingham, a classic Colonial in Medway, or a condo in Milford with zero yardwork. Suddenly, something they never thought they’d love becomes the perfect fit.

In a state where every town has its own personality, school system, tax rate, and architectural flavor, finding the right “variety” matters. When you do, everything clicks - just like my peas.

Sometimes all it takes is trying something new to discover what truly fits.

Good morning Kelly McGovern I hope your peas grow in abundance. I tried to plant tomatoes and I was not successful. We did jalapeño peppers last year and it was a success. We are trying again this year and it appears that we will have plenty. I am glad that you found the right type of peas pleasant to your taste. It does compare to Real Estate.

What a fun analogy, Kelly. My husband is Dutch, so we do consume peas in our home quite often. Although he is on his own when it comes to pea soup.

Great post, Kelly! What a wonderful and creative analogy. You are so right—home buyers often think they know exactly what they want until they step into a completely different "variety" of home or neighborhood and realize it's the perfect fit. There really is a unique match for everyone out there. Thanks for sharing such a fresh and fun perspective!

I love the analogy and totally agree, sometimes a home just clicks when the buyers walk in and then they explain to themselves how this is the right house even when it does not match what they told you.

I am not big on peas either, but growing them yourself and eating them fresh, I am sure that I would enjoy them more that way as well, haha.
