Why Is the Pacifica Pier Closed? Latest Updates on Damage and Repairs.

A Difficult Week for Pacifica

If you have driven by the Pacifica Pier recently, you have probably noticed somethingmissing. The familiar sight of anglers lining the railings. Families taking photos. Visitors stopping for coffee at Chit Chat Cafe. Residents enjoying one of Pacifica most iconic landmarks. Today, the pier sits closed.

Over the past several days, many residents have reached out asking what happened, why the pier closed so suddenly, and what comes next. This article summarizes what has been publicly reported and what we know today.

What Happened?

On June 4, the City of Pacifica announced the immediate closure of the Pacifica
Municipal Pier after city staff discovered significant structural damage near the pier connection to land. Officials reported cracking, separation, and displacement of portions of the concrete walkway and structural components. Photos released by the city showed a large crack running through a section of the structure near Chit Chat Cafe. Because public safety is the highest priority, the pier, Chit Chat Café, and surrounding areas were closed while engineers began a detailed structural assessment. At the time, city officials stated the pier would remain closed until engineers could determine whether it was safe for public use.

Why Did the Situation Escalate So Quickly?

According to multiple news reports and statements from city officials, the damage
continued to worsen after the initial discovery. Engineers observed movement in the structure, and the crack reportedly widened as portions of the abutment shifted. The first span of the pier is attached to the abutment and there are increasing concerns about stability.

As conditions deteriorated, the city declared a local emergency and expanded safety measures around the area. While engineers continue their investigation, officials have indicated that rough surf, repeated storm impacts, and long-term exposure to harsh ocean conditions likely contributed to the structural problems.

The Loss of Chit Chat Café One of the most emotional parts of this story has been the loss of Chit Chat Cafe. For decades, the cafe served fishermen, visitors, and local residents. Many people have memories of grabbing coffee before a fishing trip, meeting friends, or simply enjoying the ocean views.

After engineers evaluated the site, they determined that the building faced a significant risk of falling into the ocean due to movement beneath the structure. As a result, the City moved forward with the emergency demolition of the building to protect publicsafety.

Demolition preparation started on June 8 th and the actual demolition began on June 9. Watching the building come down was difficult for many residents because it represented much more than a business. It was part of Pacifica identity. During the demolition, skilled construction workers were able to safely remove several items that were important to the operators of the Chit Chat Café.

Why the Pacifica Pier Matters

The Pacifica Municipal Pier is more than concrete, steel, and railings. Built in 1973, the pier has served generations of Pacificans and visitors from throughout California. It has long been known as one of the most popular public fishing piers in the Bay Area. No fishing license is required, making it accessible to everyone.

For many families, visiting the pier became a tradition.People learned to fish there. Children caught their first crab there. Photographers captured sunsets there.

Visitors watched migrating whales from there. The pier became one of the landmarks most closely associated with Pacifica. That is why this closure feels personal to so many residents.

Has the Pier Experienced Problems Before?

Yes. The Pacifica Pier has faced several challenges over the years. Storm damage led to closures in 2021 and again following severe weather events in 2023 and 2024. Previous engineering reports identified deterioration associated with age, corrosion, and exposure to the marine environment.

Repair planning had already begun before the current emergency.
Several reports have referenced a repair and rehabilitation effort estimated at
approximately $19 million, although the recent damage may affect future cost estimates.

What Is Happening Right Now?

As of today, the pier remains closed. According to city officials, the immediate focus is stabilizing the damaged section and preventing additional movement. Engineers continue evaluating the structure while crews perform emergency work near the affected area.

Pier in Pacifica

The City of Pacifica has formally requested State emergency assistance and asked the Governor to declare a state of emergency. At the same time, local, state, and federal leaders have begun discussing potential funding assistance.

On June 15th, Congressman Sam Liccardo held a press conference near the pier and announced efforts to pursue federal support for repairs and long-term stabilization. Also in attendance were State Senator Josh Becker, State Assemblymember Berman, San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller, and the members of the Pacifica City Council.

City officials emphasized that significant outside resources will likely benecessary given the scale of the damage and the cost of repairs.

Questions Many Residents Are Asking:

Can the Pier Be Saved?

At this point, engineers are still conducting assessments. No final determination has been announced regarding long-term repair options. Future decisions will depend on engineering findings, funding availability, environmental considerations, and public discussions. Key to this question is the ability of the State and Federal government to provide significant amounts of funding to support the Pier.

When Will the Pier Reopen?

There is currently no reopening date. The city has stated that the pier will remain closed until necessary repairs have been made and structural engineers determine it is safe.

What About Funding?

Funding remains one of the largest challenges. Officials are exploring county, state, and federal resources to help address stabilization and future repair needs. Several elected officials have already begun advocating for outside assistance.

Looking Ahead

The future of the Pacifica Pier remains uncertain. What is certain is the important role the pier has played in our community for more than fifty years. Residents care deeply about this landmark because it represents much more than a structure extending into the ocean. It is part of Pacifica story.

Pier now

As additional engineering information becomes available and public updates are
released, residents can expect continued discussion about the pier future.
For now, the focus remains on public safety, stabilization efforts, and understanding the full extent of the damage.

Like many members of our community, I will continue following developments closely and sharing publicly available information as it becomes available.

Disclosure: I serve as the Pacifica City Councilmember for District 1. This article is intended to provide information and public updates regarding the Pacifica Municipal Pier. It is not intended to advocate for any future City Council action.

Mayra, that is a good reason to close the pier, especially if anglers are always there fishing.

Thanks, Joan. I agree. Safety has to come first. The pier is a great community asset, but it needs to be safe for anglers, visitors, and everyone who enjoys spending time there. Hopefully the repairs will help preserve it for future generations.
