Wordless Wednesday…A Short and Precious Life

The downside of caring for our bluebirds is that you end up caring for them. For Larry and me, this is true for all of God’s creatures we see. (except for snakes)

The bluebird chicks fledged on Sunday. We could tell they were ready to meet the world. All 4 had grown so much and were scrambling to test their wings. Three of the chicks flew out and up, immediately…one at a time…up, up, and away!!!

                                                                      The empty nest

But there was the fourth bluebird chick. Now that his 3  siblings fledged,  there was a lot more room to spread his wings.  He had the box all to himself. However, at the urging of his parents, baby bluebird left the only home he’d known for parts unknown.

However, this chick did not fly off and join its siblings. Instead, he seemed to prefer being on terra firma.

And there it stayed. We kept our eyes on it, as did its parents, who kept track of it from our rooftop.

Meanwhile, our terra frima chick hopped and waved its wings around our backyard and the driveway.

Larry gently picked up the chick and placed it back in the nest box to give it time to gain some strength. It was not looking good.

Additional nestbox time seemed to do it some good. In fact, he felt so good, he left the box for the second time.

All day Monday, he continued to hop around the yard, while his parents watched over him.

Sadly, the little bluebird chick did not have enough in him to make it.  It breaks my heart to think of any of God’s creatures (humans included) who are given such a short life.

What a beautiful yet heartbreaking story, Kathy. It really is impossible not to invest your heart into these little guys once you start watching over them. Nature can be so fragile, but you and Larry gave that sweet bluebird chick every possible ounce of love and a fighting chance. Those quotes are the perfect reminder to cherish every little moment. Thank you for sharing such a touching update.

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 you never get used to it, do you?  In FL we saw a large heron take off with a moorhen chick. There was nothing we could do.

Sad Kathy, but at least you were able to give that little bluebird every chance you could.

Good morning, Kathy... a beautiful and sad story at the same time. At least you know that you and Larry gave that little bird every chance to fly off into the big world. And at least a snake didn't get it. I remain firmly of the belief that the only good snake is a dead snake.

Nina Hollander, Broker you and I are on the same page when it comes to snakes. Would you believe Mama Bluebird is already building a nest in our box!

A short life is indeed sad, but I have to believe that there is always a good reason for it.

Oh the poor baby probably didn’t have something he needed in order to fly. Not all stories have a happy ending!

Kat Palmiotti we had hope when we saw it could flap its wings and hop around.

Kathy, it is sad to watch this, furry or human.  I am still mourning my adopted mom.  Can't believe she lived only 2.5 weeks after I last saw her.

Awww. This is why I am not cut out for that. I would hate that part. We had a canary we found at the bottom of the cage...so sad.

The nest by our front door is empty, not sure if the birds hatched or were taken by a squirrel as I found one being attacked by mother or father bird one morning and chased the squirrel away.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 We had to chase hawks away. They were sitting on the fence looking for a meal!  There may be time for another nest!!!
