Coffee Across the Miles:
A Visit with Gwen in Northwest South Carolina

I officially debuted Coffee Across the Miles this week on ActiveRain, and I could not have asked for a better inaugural conversation than my visit with Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518

Gwen was gracious enough to be my first ActiveRain member interview by Zoom, and what a gift that was.

I originally introduced this concept back in April with my Buffini friends, but I had a feeling I would enjoy it even more with my ActiveRain peeps. After all, ActiveRain has always been about more than blogging. At its best, it is about connection, conversation, and getting to know the real people behind the posts.

Gwen made the perfect first guest. Warm, experienced, thoughtful, and generous with her time, she reminded me exactly why these conversations matter.

Gwen has been in real estate since 1987, which means she brings the kind of lived experience you do not get from a class, a script, or a shiny new app. She knows her market because she has worked it, served it, and watched it change across decades. Her corner of the world is northwest South Carolina, where the mountains and lakes do a lot of the talking. She serves an area with three beautiful public lakes, mountain views, and the kind of lifestyle that appeals to people who are ready for a little more breathing room.

One of the things I enjoyed most was hearing how Gwen thinks about connection. She joined ActiveRain in 2006, stepped away for a season, and later returned during COVID. Like many of us, she has seen the platform evolve, and she has strong, thoughtful opinions about what makes a community healthy.

Her approach to commenting especially stood out to me. Rather than commenting on the same familiar posts over and over, Gwen intentionally looks for different blogs and newer voices. She understands that encouragement is part of the ecosystem. If the same few people always get the attention, new members may never feel invited into the conversation. That is not just smart networking. That is good stewardship.

We also talked about technology, including how Gwen uses Gemini AI to help choose which blogs to read  and double check contracts. I appreciated her practical approach. She is not using AI to replace her thinking. She is using it to save time, sort through information, and keep herself moving. That is exactly how these tools should serve us.

Of course, the conversation was not all business. Gwen shared about her husband, Henry, whom she married 19 years ago, along with her daughter, stepchildren, and three grandchildren, all connected to military service. We talked about how COVID disrupted education, how rural internet struggled to keep up, and how federal grants have helped improve connectivity in her area.

We also compared notes on the joys and headaches of working with contractors. Gwen’s rural market has its own rhythm, and she has learned to rely on long-term contractors who may be older, but still answer the phone, show up, and do the job right. There is a lesson in that.

When I asked Gwen about her ideal referral, her answer was clear: professionals around 45 to 55, often in hybrid roles, who only need to travel occasionally to places like Atlanta or New York, but want to live with lake and mountain views every day. If you know someone like this, or a retiree considering South Carolina, please consider sending them Gwen’s way. According to Gwen, South Carolina is currently the #1 retirement destination in the country, and she knows the SC Lakes & Mountains region beautifully.

That is the beauty of conversations like this. You do not just learn where someone sells real estate. You learn who they are, how they think, and who they are best equipped to serve.

Thank you, Gwen, for sharing your morning, your wisdom, and your corner of South Carolina with me.

Hi Thomas,
What a wonderful way to launch your series. One of the things I love about ActiveRain is that it allows us to get to know the person behind the profile, and your conversation with Gwen did exactly that. She sounds like the perfect first guest... experienced, thoughtful, and generous with both her knowledge and her encouragement of others. I'm looking forward to seeing who joins you for coffee next!
