Mayo Lake - Discover Hidden Paradise
Woods for hiking, picnicking or just enjoying wildlife... Water for boating, fishing, skiing, canoeing, kayaking or reflections of stunning sunsets... There are very few combinations that do more to soothe, relax and refresh ones spirit than that of woods and water. This incredible combination is a hidden paradise that can be found just minutes north of the Triangle in Person County.
Mayo Lake is a reservoir located in Northern Person County. The lake is owned by Progress Energy. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Management would only allow the power company to build Mayo if they agreed to not allow development of the shoreline. They could not allow any disturbance of the land from the water level to the high water mark. Nothing was to be done to change the landscape. This in essence protects the wildlife by keeping it in its undisturbed state.
Mayo now has 85 miles of pristine shoreline that surrounds the 2800-acre lake. In 1996 Progress Energy committed to a long-term lease that allows Person County to develop 120 acres of wooded parkland along side the lake for public recreational purposes. Construction has since taken place to provide facilities for visitors without adversely affecting the natural area. Today the park offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation and education in a scenic environment. The facility now includes:
*Canoe & Kayak boat launch
*Future Environmental Education & Community Center
There are also several annual events and programs held at the lake such as:
*Numerous fishing tournaments
*Canoe & Kayaking Festival
*Evening movies at the amphitheatre
*Cross Country 5K Run
