Claire Sucsy
1936 - 2026

Yesterday I went to the memorial service for someone who meant a lot to me during my Coldwell Banker Evanston years — Claire Sucsy.

Claire wasn’t just a top producer for nearly 30 years. She was the person I watched, listened to, and learned from simply by sitting a few desks in front of her. I absorbed more from overhearing her handle clients, stress, negotiations, and everyday conversations than from any class or training I ever took.

I used to call her the velvet hammer. She had that soft Texas drawl that made everyone feel comfortable, but underneath it was steel. She was kind, she was gracious, and she was absolutely not someone you pushed around. She didn’t need to raise her voice to command a room.

Claire was generous in ways that mattered. She shared referrals. She gave newer agents open house opportunities on her endless list of listings. She mentored people quietly, without making a show of it. She helped more careers than she probably ever realized.

She eventually retired at the top of her game and moved to North Carolina to be near her daughter, Sandra, who many of us also knew from the office. Claire passed in January, and Sandra spoke at the service. She told a story that summed Claire up perfectly: a seasoned agent once lost out in a multiple‑offer situation on one of Claire’s listings. Claire called him personally to let him know, because that’s who she was, and she was so warm and apologetic that he ended up apologizing to her for not bringing a stronger offer. That was Claire. Sweet, sincere, and somehow still the one in control.

It hasn’t been that long since she was here, working alongside all of us. She was a force in this community, and she earned every bit of respect she got.

I’ll be honest, I was disappointed to see how few agents showed up. I know she passed months ago and this wasn’t the funeral, but the family was here, and it would have meant something for them to see how highly she was regarded in the place where she built her career.

Maybe that’s just me. But Claire deserved a room full of people whose lives were better because she was in them.

Good morning Alan May ,

I loved your post on Claire and wished more agents took the time to honor her memory like you have. She sounds like someone who deserved a room full of people whose lives were enriched by her strength and guidance.

This is a beautiful tribute to Claire. It is indeed unfortunate that more agents did not attend - that show of support would have been wonderful for the family. I'm glad you could attend.

Alan,

It was so nice to read this post, and learn more about the character and work of Clare. You were fortunate to know her, because actions of such people stay long with us and eventually make our everyday interactions with the world around us better. I know somebody like her who can act similarly like she did in the multiple offer situation, and often think when in difficult situations how they would have reacted.

I think we all know someone similar.

What a heartfelt appreciation for Claire you gave. I can tell how much she meant to you. I am sorry for your loss and the pain that brings with it, unfortunately as we age we encounter it more and more.

Alan- This is a beautiful tribute for a woman who, from your words, must have been a  one-of-a-kind, force to be reckoned with.  I would love to have known her.  Were I your mother, I would say, I'm so proud of you, son, for paying respect to her by going to her service.

Alan, this is a beautiful and deeply touching tribute to Claire. It sounds like she was truly a remarkable professional and mentor—the "velvet hammer" is such a wonderful description of someone who leads with both grace and strength.

It is always disappointing when a gathering doesn't fully reflect the immense impact a person had during their career, but your words here honor her legacy beautifully. Thank you for sharing a glimpse of the incredible person and agent she was. Comfort and peace to her family and all who loved her.

Thank you for the highlight, well written. When you are a top real estate producer in your area, it is not a guarantee you will have standing room only at your funeral Alan May

Jealousy can creep into the room of agents resenting Claire's tenacity to take a bigger market share than others in her zip codes wish she did. Even if legitimately earned, well deserved.

Had a Rotary annual dinner meeting last night where we presented Paul Harris Fellow awards. And picking the nominee looks deep into the community spirit of volunteering, kindness, humility and serve above self.  Was she a Rotarian and maybe do what you can to get her recognized for the Claire you knew and respected.

Alan May

She was not a Rotarian... but she shouldn't need to be, for recognition.

I did not know her, but how nice of you to leave this tribute. It sounds like her techniques were built over a long 90 year life. When people are that old-- I listen. I'm sure you learned a thing or two.
