Journal Entry for Father's Day 6/21/2026
I wish to acknowledge father's everywhere who make sacrifices to support their children and family. Growing up, Father's Day was a big deal because there were few dads at that time in history. My father was an exception. The dads where I lived wore blue color clothing who did physical labor working long hours producing, building, or digging with their hands.
The neighborhood where I'm from had mostly children raised by widows, aunts, and grandmothers. Truthfully, I was lucky because my father was alive to see me get married and have children. But growing up, my father worked on skyscrapers, and he was the designated driver for my mother, my aunts, children without dads, and women who were widowed early in life.
During the years when I got married the children from my generation had fathers mostly coming home from Vietnam. If they had a job, they were lucky. Most became tradesmen, such as mechanics, welders, workers on the railroad, manufacturing, or agriculture. There were many fathers skilled in specific crafts.
I especially want to wish Happy Father's Day to fathers alive today, especially professional Police Officers and Firefighters, including those Military dads who cannot be home to be honored by their loved ones today. In my neighborhood, every father I know are businessmen or salesmen in real estate. They work at home or in an office. But in the Midwest where I grew up, fathers, like my nephews still struggle to put food on the table and find meaningful work.
May all fathers on earth experience love, be given ample income to provide for their families, and be safe during dangerous situations in today's world.
