Friday Fun…Do You 👍

You receive a text, read it, then what? How many times have you sent someone a text, then bupkus?

For example, you send a Happy Anniversary text to someone and crickets. Did they receive it? Did you get the wrong day?

So when you see or communicate with them again, you may ask if they received your Happy Anniversary text.  To which they reply… “Oh yes, I did. Thank you.”

True story: a friend and I texted quite a bit, especially when she was sitting at a child’s game. It was easier than calling.

However, we were so darn polite to each other that we never could figure out how to sign off. One day, we decided that (for us) TTYL was our way of saying “over and out.”

Recently, I did some dumpster diving in Cyberville and learned that younger generations often have different texting expectations.

A message such as, "On my way home," is seen as informational rather than conversational. In other words, it's a statement, not a question, so they may not respond—not because they're ignoring you, but because they don't think a reply is expected.

So, for some Friday Fun, how do you text?

Do you always reply with either words or an emoji?

Do you reply at all???

Good morning, Kathy... I try to respond to all texts even if it's only with a thumbs up emoji to indicate receipt.

Nina Hollander, Broker So do I!  I do it to let the sender know it was received.

I always reply, unless it's spam of course. So if an actual person texts me, even if it's just to say "on the way" I will definitely respond. I have been on the other side (never receiving a response) and I don't like it so won't do it.

I do the same Kat Palmiotti   At the very least I use a thumbs up.  I have some friends (usually young ones) who do nothing.

Good morning Kathy. Sometimes vigilant with a quick acknowledgement and sometimes guilty of no reply. I am on the learning curve and likely need to do better. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin my niece's husband rarely responds yea or nay to my texts. He does on occasion, text me to say hello.

I am open to it all and agree that some messages are merely informational and don't warrant a response, especially since we can see if the message has been read or not these days, haha.  I don't like being ghosted, though, so if there is a question mark in the message, I had better get a response, haha.

Brian England it works if they have it turned on but many don't.  All I need is a thumbs up.

I do not usually send text messages and I discourage text messages to me. I prefer email.

Along the same lines for communication, tagging someone on ActiveRain is not always the best way to send a message. I do not look at all of the tags. So, there is no need to tag me when I leave a comment.

Roy- I can appreciate that. I'm the opposite in that I would rather receive a text. But whatever works!!!

Kathy, I try to finish a text "conversation", and not leave the other hanging.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner I like that. All I want is any kind of sign that my text was received.

Hi Kathy,
It depends on who I'm texting with. Oftentimes, I just sign off or acknowledge with an emoji with sunglasses (😎) or a thumbs up.

Carol Williams that's what I usually do when someone sends a text that doesn"t require a multi-word answer.

Like I tell my GF...not every text requires a response. That being said, some require a simple thank you or at least a thumbs up.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty that's all that's needed. Let the person know you received their message. Then after that, it's on you.

Kathy even though I do not like to text, I always respond to text messages quickly.  However, I find that the younger generation is HORIBLE at responding.

Kathy:

I always try to respond even with just a thumbs up to let someone know I saw the text if a more detailed response is not needed. Not everyone wants to have a long text conversation or it's not warranted depending on the situation.
