Dr. Paula McDonald recently (June 27, 2026) posted a blog about What Painted Hermit Crabs Can Teach Us About Life. What she was writing mirrored Wayne Dwyer’s quote:
“When you change how you look at things, the things you look at will change.”
Her post reminded me of a photograph that I had recently taking when driving the 1.6 mile dirt road that faces the Black Mountains and leads to my house. As I was driving, I noticed something different about the Black Mountains, something that caught my attention, something that I had never seen before given that I have driven this road at least hundreds of times going to and from our home. Yet I never saw what I saw that day.
Maybe the reason for this change was because the sun was hitting this area of the Black Mountains just right or possibly, I was driving slower than I usually do to avoid the dirt road washboard sections. Whatever ever the reason, I stopped twice and took a photograph. To say I was intrigued was accurate.
For me, the change was I saw a Mountain Lion or what some call a cougar crouching waiting for the moment to pounce on a prey. This image was very clear in my mind’s eye.
I then wondered if those who had come before me, those Native American and early pioneers had ever seen this image? My introspective thoughts continued as a I pondered this image of a Mountain Lion.
Stopping was changing how I looked at things and the things in this case, the Black Mountains, had change. Life is full of changes. Sometimes as Kathy pointed out we need to look beyond what we physically see and become more introspective.
For me, seeing the crouching Mountain Lion reminded me of why I so love living here where we have been presented with so many opportunities to look at things differently. Hopefully, you can see that Mountain Lion as well.
