Ask An Ambassador: Just In Case

Blogging isn't everything.  Real estate isn't everything either.

That might seem to be strange statements coming from someone who blogged daily for over 10 years, and been dual careering for over 22 years, but from more than one perspective, it's a true statement.

For years, if I left town for any reason, my laptop was coming with me.

Just in case I needed to write an offer.

Just in case I needed to prep for a listing presentation.

Just in case I needed to blog.

Just in case there was something urgent with my engineering job.

Just in case...and the list could go on and on.

So far this month I've made 3 trips, 2 planned, and one for a short notice emergency.  Times my laptop came with me? Zero.

The reasons for the trips topped anything else I could want or need to do that involved blogging or real estate.  I tend to be a private person, so the number of you that know the WHY behind the emergency trip is small, and will likely stay that way.

Sometimes, everything else can wait while ONE THING that truly matters is first.

The ideas for posts will still be there tomorrow.  Next week.  Next month.

Business can be referred.

Appointments can be rescheduled.

There will always be people buying and selling homes.

Being where you're needed, when you're needed, that's the priceless part of life.

And not being there when you needed to be?  It can remind you that sometimes we need to examine our priorities, and make some changes.  Some opportunities are one time offers.

Keeping in short, perhaps there's somewhere else I should be.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Bill & Liz aka BLiz

It is a great reminder that our priorities sometimes need shifting and that being present for what truly matters is irreplaceable. Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful perspective!

Gwen, for way too long, I let my business life (both engineering and real estate) dictate my days, weeks, etc.  Vacation days from engineering work used to work with real estate clients, plans shifted, etc., and looking back, the return on those swaps was rarely worthwhile.

Good morning Bill. Sometimes you just don't need your laptop. Back in the dark ages when I started in real estate many were lost without their pocket calculator but survived. I did not learn that I could survive without my laptop until I retired and figured it out. Congrats on your head start. Enjoy your day.

Wayne, most of my essentials are on my phone.  Maybe not as easy as having a full keyboard, but quick tasks are still quite doable, if it TRULY needs done.  But for most people, if I explain I'm out of town and will take care of them when I come back, that works.

Truth is, we get to the point that we can refer business we no longer need. We can push off things as we become more comfortable. Those who are just starting out often need to take every morsal they can. I love THIS stage of life  :)

No doubt, early on, I took on clients that I shouldn't have for the sake of potential business.  Too many time wasters or people without loyalty.  I've learned my lessons.

Good morning Bill,

I have to say as much as Geno and I traveled I ALWAYS had someone watching my business and I didn't do business on vacations. That time was precious and I now look back and so glad my priorities where in place!

Dorie, I'm glad you and Geno had those trips together!  I had a vicarious vacation or two thanks to your travels!

There are definitely more important things than blogging and work.  I don't know what your emergency trips were for, nor do I need to know, but you and your family will be in my prayers even more heavily.

Hi Bill,
This says it all:

"Being where you're needed, when you're needed, that's the priceless part of life."

It has been a hard lesson to learn, and I can't say I don't have any regrets about past absences.

Bill I am not there yet.  My laptop still travels with me, even when I do not expecting the need to use it.

My phone provides me email/internet, and for the most part that's enough for me.

Yes indeed - there are times when we are not going to be focused on work or anything else because there are much more important things going on.  Then it's perfectly okay to leave the laptop and the work at home.

The clock is always ticking, and the older I get, the more I realized the shortness of what remains.  Do I use that time in the best way?  Not always.

I've been having similar thoughts Liz and Bill Spear - and have decided to focus more on making memories and less on doing things a certain way.

Liz and Bill Spear I tend to agree with you I have learned that as long as I have my important passwords with me most of the times I can survive.   Explain  why things must wait until my return is usually exceptable .

And I find the same, most understand, and if it's your knowledge that won them over, they'll wait a bit for it to be available.

Words of wisdom! I have always said that real estate is not about life or death. Things can often wait a minute.

True emergencies are rare...although finding a busted water pipe in a house can make things interesting quickly :)

Reading this caused my eyes to well up Bill Liz and Bill Spear and you know why.

Nothing is more important than being where we need to be when we need to be there.

PERIOD.

Oh I have so learned this lesson this past year or two Bill!   I had to  'Let Go and Let God" so many times it's kind of crazy.  I've gotten really good at it! But here I am back in the rain and enjoying the community.

This really resonates with me this week. When you need to be somewhere more important, nothing else matters. Like you said, the business will still be there when you return.
