Wordless Wednesday…Still Waiting

 

The eggs in our Bluebird box at home should be hatching any day now. They are on their eleventh day. The average incubation is 12-14 days. 

 

Larry placed an umbrella over the box this week to minimize the heat in the box. It’s been in the mid to upper 90s here. Inside the box can be 10 degrees warmer. Prolonged temperatures of 107℉ can be fatal. 



And…the bees are back!



Every living thing needs water! And the bees are no exception. These are a few of the bees that stop by for a drink. They take the water back to their hive to cool it through evaporation.

Good morning, Kathy... love that picture of the umbrella shading the bird box. And I had no idea that bees carry water to their hives. My fingers remained crossed for the little bluebirds to come.

We were out for a walk the other day and Hercules smelled (and found) a large egg. It was a turkey egg and it looks like someone got a hold of it and then dropped it (since it was broken). Later the same day we saw a mom and about five small turkeys wandering around. It probably wasn't the same turkey but it did make me think about how hard life is for wild animals.

Awww Kat Palmiotti that's sad.    In the last two years, we've had 2 fledglings not make it past a day or two. It really is hard for wild animals.

We found a fledging bird (not sure what kind) dead near our driveway today and I thought of you Kathy Streib - maybe for some reason the flying thing didn't work for him.

Morning Kathy Streib that is so sweet to place the umbrella over the birdcage. I have a bird feeder in front of my kitchen window and my husband always takes care of it. We also make sure the birds and squirrels have water.

I sure hope the birdies can survive the heat Kathy.  You two do all you can to help them along the way. It's so hot here this week and we're making sure the fountains are flowing as the birds need water and shade which we have a lot of.

The heat can be extreme and at times under the copy of trees it feels almost 15 degrees cooler. Hopefully the umbrella will keep the eggs from frying.
