☕Coffee Across The Miles With Debe Maxwell: A Career Built on Care, Courage, and Community

Some real estate conversations start with market stats.
The better ones start with a story. 😉

My recent Coffee Across The Miles visit with Debe Maxwell, CRS  was one of those easy conversations where the real estate talk showed up, took off its shoes, and made itself comfortable. We covered careers, family, safety, ActiveRain, market crashes, team-building, client boundaries, and a few of the survival skills you only earn after enough years in this business.

In other words, a normal chat between two longtime REALTORS® who have learned that real estate is rarely just about real estate.
But this visit was really about Debe, and she was areal treat as you'll soon see.

Debe’s story did not begin with yard signs, MLS remarks, or anyone asking, “Can we just write it subject to selling my cousin’s ferret condo?”

It began in nursing. Which hit home with me, as I my step-Mom was a nurse and one of my sisters is a nurse to this day.

Before Debe became a well-known Charlotte real estate professional, she spent fifteen years as a nurse. That background matters. You can hear it in how she talks about people. Nursing teaches patience, judgment, steadiness, and how to remain calm when everyone else in the room is having a moment.

Come to think of it, that is not bad training for escrow either. 😊

After years in nursing, Debe’s life began to shift. Her husband, Ray, and her father-in-law encouraged her to spend more time at home with her children. But Debe, being Debe, was not wired to simply sit still and admire the curtains. She needed purpose. She needed movement. She needed something that allowed her to use her instincts, her work ethic, and her care for people.

Real estate came through the side door.

Her interest in flipping houses led her to get her real estate license, and what started as a new chapter eventually became a 22-year career. That is one of the things I love about real estate stories. So many of us did not enter this business through the front door with a marching band. We wandered in through life changes, family needs, unexpected opportunities, and, occasionally, sheer stubbornness.

Debe stayed. Not only did she stay, she built.

Time For You An Me To Talk?

Today, Debe leads a successful collaborative real estate team in Charlotte. Her team has been nominated for the Charlotte Observer’s number one real estate team four years in a row, which tells you something right away. That kind of recognition does not come from luck. It comes from consistency, reputation, client loyalty, and a whole lot of doing the next right thing when nobody is handing out trophies for it.

What impressed me most was how Debe describes her team.

It is not built around ego.

It is not built around control.

It is not built around squeezing every dollar out of the people around her.

Her team operates more like a professional brain trust. They support one another. They brainstorm. They share ideas. Many of the agents came from her time as broker-in-charge at RE/MAX, which tells you something about Debe’s leadership. People tend to stay connected to leaders who make them better without making them feel smaller.

That is a gift. It is also rarer than it should be.

Debe still works directly with buyers and sellers. She still receives referrals from other agents. She still has loyal clients who come back and send others her way. That does not happen because of a shiny slogan or one clever social media post.
It happens because people trust her.

And trust, as we all know, is still the best lead source in real estate. It just does not come with a drip campaign and a dashboard, so some folks forget how valuable it is.

Debe has also been through enough market cycles to know that this business will humble you if you start thinking you have it all figured out.

When the 2008 market crash hit, Debe adapted. She learned short sales at a time when many people were scared, confused, and desperately trying to understand the new rules of a very painful market. ActiveRain became a classroom, support group, resource library, and sometimes group therapy session with better keywords.

Debe became known as a strong short sale resource in Charlotte, and she used what she learned to help clients and other agents. That is the best of The Rain.

Yes, ActiveRain has had its lively moments. Any online community full of opinionated real estate people is bound to have a few “spirited discussions,” which is polite REALTOR® language for “somebody probably needed to step away from the keyboard and count to 10.”

But at its best, The Rain has always been about professionals helping professionals. Agents teaching agents. People sharing what worked, what did not work, what almost made them lose their mind, and what they would do differently next time. Debe understands that part of the community because she lived it.

We also talked about one of the less glamorous but very important parts of today’s real estate world: safety.

Debe uses Forewarn through her MLS board, and she was clear about how valuable it is, especially for women in real estate. We talked about screening clients, requiring proof of funds or pre-approval, and setting better boundaries before meeting strangers at properties. That is one of the benefits of experience. Eventually, you stop confusing accessibility with professionalism.

A newer agent may feel pressure to meet anyone, anywhere, anytime. A seasoned agent knows better. You learn to verify. You learn to slow things down. You learn that “no” is not rude when it protects your safety, your time, your family, and your clients.

Debe has that seasoned clarity. She is warm, but not careless. Helpful, but not naïve. Professional, but not performative. That balance is earned.

Beyond the business, what I enjoyed most was hearing about Debe’s life. She and Ray have been married for 30 years and have built a blended family with children and grandchildren. Her real estate career has given her the kind of flexibility that sounds simple until you understand what it really means.

It means being able to help her 90-year-old father move from Florida to Charlotte over several days. It means being available when family needs her. It means having a business that supports her life, not a life that constantly apologizes to her business.

That kind of flexibility is not the fantasy version people sometimes sell when recruiting agents. It is not “make your own schedule” while quietly working seven days a week and answering texts during dinner.

Real flexibility is earned through experience, systems, reputation, and enough discipline to build a business that does not require you to chase everything that moves.

Debe and Ray also recently sold their lake house and moved into the city, partly for health reasons and partly because life changes. What I loved was hearing how that move opened up a different kind of life for them. More access to restaurants, music, arts, friends, clients, and community.

Sometimes we think we are closing a chapter, only to discover the next one has better parking and more dinner options. There is a lesson in that too.

Debe's is a story of reinvention without drama. Nursing to real estate. Flipping curiosity to full-time career. Broker leadership to collaborative team building.
Lake life to city life. Market crisis to trusted advisor. Through all of it, Debe seems to have kept the same center: care for people, keep learning, adapt when needed, and do not let the business harden your heart. That last part matters.

Real estate can make people sharp in all the wrong ways if they are not careful. The pressure, the competition, the clients, the forms, the deadlines, the negotiations, the online noise, the occasional “urgent” problem that has apparently been urgent for three weeks before anyone told you. It can wear people down.

But Debe has stayed engaged, thoughtful, practical, and generous. She has experience, she has boundaries, and she has a strong business, but still seems to remember that people are the point. That is worth noticing. That is worth celebrating. And yes, that is worth a good cup of coffee across the miles.

If you know Debe Maxwell, you already know she is the real deal. If you do not, I am happy to introduce you to a Charlotte REALTOR® with a nurse’s heart, a leader’s steadiness, and the kind of long-game professionalism this industry could use more of.

The best real estate careers are not built overnight. They are built one client, one relationship, one hard season, one smart pivot, and one generous conversation at a time. Debe Maxwell has built exactly that!

Hi TJ
Having had the privilege of meeting both Debe and Ray, and even being welcomed into their home on the lake, I can say this article captures them perfectly. Debe has a genuine servant's heart, which is perfect for a successful career in real estate. She is warm, authentic, generous with her knowledge, and the kind of person who makes everyone around her feel valued, whether it's in a personal or professional setting. Debe Maxwell, CRS and Ray are absolutely two of my favorite people in The Rain, and I'm grateful our paths crossed.
