Celebrating the 250th Birthday of America the Beautiful

This is my entry to the ActiveRain Challenge, Celebrating the 250th Birthday of America the Beautiful, hosted by Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Real Estate Svcs., and Kathy Streib.

I was born and raised right here in the USA. In fact, I grew up in Philadelphia, PA—home of the Liberty Bell, the birthplace of Betsy Ross (who made the first American flag), and the historic city where the Declaration of Independence was signed. This year, we proudly celebrated the 250th anniversary of that historic signing.

When I was growing up, my father and I used to talk around the kitchen table. I would ask, "Dad, what nationality are we?" He would always answer, "We are Americans." I would press further, "No, Daddy, look at the other kids at school. Some are Italian, others are German, and some are Irish. What are we?"

Dad would always look at me and give the exact same answer:

"WE ARE AMERICANS."

When you think about it, he was right. Let us all be truthful: no one, except for the American Indians, originally originated in America. Everyone came from somewhere else. We truly are the melting pot of the world.

My own grandparents came to this country in the 1890s from Belarus. My father was born here, grew up to receive a football scholarship to college, and was the youngest of six children. He later left college to marry my mother, Ada. Mom had a difficult start; she was orphaned at just 12 years old and lived at the Rebecca Gratz home with her sister Lillian until she was old enough to work and support herself. My father worked hard because he wanted to support my grandmother, Hannah—after whom I am named.

(Below is a picture of my Dad)

I was raised to be a proud American, and I truly am. There is no other country in the world I would rather live in. I grew up in a wonderful time and have been blessed with fantastic opportunities and memories. I raised two beautiful children here, and now I have four wonderful grandchildren and have made fantastic friendships.

Where else in this wide world could you find the kind of freedom we enjoy every day in the great USA?

Hello, Miss Hannah Williams to answer your wrap-up question:

NOWHERE !!!!

It is so sweet that you are named after your Grandmother.  So many of that generation were orphaned, including my Dad and several of his 13 siblings!

That photo of your Dad ... PRICELESS.

I have no clue about my ancestral origin.  Both parents were US-born, and that is all I know.  I am not curious enough to send my DNA to a third party to find out (LOL).

Thank you, Hannah, for participating in the July Challenge. I enjoyed reading more about you, your love for this Country, and your love of Philadelphia, PA.

Hannah, great post for this month's challenge, but haven't looked at it yet.   We are all from somewhere else, or at least our late grandparents or great grandparents.   I know mine were from Denmark & Sweden.  Which, of course I will visit sometime in the near future.   That is a great photo of your Dad.

Good morning, Hannah... I can't tell you how much I loved your Dad's response of "we are American." Not a hyphenated American... an American. I get so annoyed when people who are third or fourth generation Americans refer to themselves as Italians, Irish, German, whatever! And most have never been to the countries of their ancestors' origins as well.

Nina Hollander, Broker . Oh, no, he was adamant about it, too, Nina. My Dad was a real American . He worked hard, and he taught me that I could be whatever I wanted to be if I worked hard for it. He was an avid reader . Which set an example for me, I always walked to the library and returned with a stack of books.  We always celebrated all the American Holidays.

Hannah Williams - Well, I'm not a FAIRY FEATURE but if I had the power, I would have FEATURED your blog post. To be born and raised in Philadelphia where the story of our American History was written and so prominent is such an honor. Your personal history about your family is so heartwarming, tender, and written with love for your parents and your heritage.

Your story is one that deserves to be written in the history books for our 250th American Birthday. I was proud to read your family history Hannah. Now I know how you got your beautiful name!!! You have every reason on earth to be proud of your heritage. I'm proud of you.

Hannah Williams - I will always support you because you're very likable, helpful, caring, and supportive of other people. When it comes to knowing the principles and knowledge for real estate issues, you have spent nearly your entire life learning the business successfully. I strongly believe that when you're a member of a large community, like ActiveRain, the best feeling in the world is to feel accepted and valued for who you are.

John Juarez  My dad passed his beliefs on to me. I pledge allegiance to the flag of United States of America and to what it stands for: one nation under God -- I don't go for this flag-burning stuff - Long may the red, white and blue wave 💯
