We Thought It Was a Three-Hour Float...

Thought you had your IRS situation under control?  A river adventure shows why asking for help early can save you time and stress.

A friend and I decided to float a leg of a river we had never floated before.  We thought we had all the information we needed to have a great time.  We figured it would take three hours at the most.  We picked a date, a time, loaded our gear, and our adventure began.

One of the things we loved most was that there weren't a bunch of people on the river.  It felt like we had it all to ourselves.

We saw an eagle soaring overhead, several muskrats, pelicans, a blue heron, and fish jumping out of the water.  The river was slow-moving, calm, peaceful, and incredibly relaxing.  It was exactly what we had hoped for.

About the three-hour mark, we figured we had to be getting close to the end, so we pulled out Google Maps to see how much farther we had to go.

WE WERE ONLY HALF WAY!

We both kind of freaked out.

It was getting late, and neither one of us wanted to spend another three hours floating down the river.  After we calmed down, we decided there had to be another place where we could get out and walk to the main road.

We studied Google Maps a little more and found what looked like a possible exit point.  I called my dad to come rescue us while we paddled across the river toward the spot.

The only problem was, our exit happened to be next to someone's house.  As we climbed out of the river, both of us were looking around, wondering if the homeowner was going to come outside yelling at us, or worse, holding a gun.

We got out of their yard as fast as we could and headed toward the road.  Then we saw the sign.

"No Trespassing."

We looked at each other and started laughing.  "We're those people."

My dad found us, took us back to our vehicles, and what could have been a stressful day became just another story to add to our book of adventures.

IRS problems remind me of that day on the river.

People think they have all the information they need and go about life thinking all is well.  All of a sudden you realize things are not well and you freak out.  You need to call someone to rescue you.

You don't have to keep floating downstream wondering how you are going to get yourself out of this mess.

Sometimes everyone needs a rescue.

If the IRS has you feeling like plans are not going as you expected, let's talk.  Schedule your free consultation, and together we'll find the best way to get you back on solid ground.  Feel free to email me at candy@numbercruncherllc.tax as well.

Your story and the way you use the analogy is great. Yes, that would have been scary.

Hello Candy... great story, albeit a bit disconcerting... and a terrific analogy to taxes and the IRS.

Thankfully the whole floats wasn't that way!

Your story reminds me of the 3 hour cruise as the story behind the TV show Gilligans Island where the 3 hours turned into years on a deserted island. 🙂

Candy, this is such a clever comparison. What begins as a calm trip can quickly become stressful when the distance is greater than expected. Asking for help early, whether on the river or with the IRS, can make all the difference.

Good morning Candy,

I missed this post so I'm glad it was featured in Carol Williams Saturday Series! What a great analogy...I would have freaked out if I had the same experience floating down the river!! Always good to ask for help if having tax problems...don't let it escalate out of control.

Candy, you had a great 3-hour float, and then the paddles and the angst took over. Fortunate that the home owners didn't have the angry slobbering dog greeting you as you stepped onto the bank

I agree totally Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 .  I don't know what would have been worse, a dog or a gun!

Enjoy your day!
