Ask An Ambassador: No Chance For Second First Impressions

By

"You never get a second chance to make a first impression".  Will Rogers

If you're a real estate professional, much of your success depends on your ability to master that first impression, and that first impression comes in many forms.

Our first contact, be it phone, text, email or in person.

Our website.

Our business cards.

Our blog posts and comments.

Our social media posts and comments.

Those impressions can be first and final at the same time.

Over the last week I've watched Facebook posts by two of my friends.  Both similar subjects, neither one political in purpose, but both noting the passing of a politician.

You'd have thought by now most people would have learned that celebrating the death of another person is not the way to make a good impression on others.  And since most real estate agents are connected to lots more agents, it shouldn't be surprising that other real estate agents are reading those comments.

The reality is if another agent (especially one with a different political bent) wanted to make an issue out of that first impression, they could.  Haven't we all heard enough stories of agents "seeking other job opportunities" after their broker found out about something posted?

We can all argue "but I've got freedom of speech rights!!!", and while Uncle Sam is forced to recognize those rights, your broker isn't as restricted.  With one click rules in place for brokerage identification, anything any of us posts is subject to how it reflects on the brokerage, so unless you're an independent broker, you have someone to answer to for your "first impressions".

The reality is nothing is truly private at this point.  A Members Only post can be copied and shared, as can that private message comment.

A potential client that finds one of your posts is going to form a positive or negative opinion of you before (or if) they ever open a second post to explore further.
In all you do, leave a positive first impression.

And sometimes, that means pushing away the keyboard rather than typing what's between your ears.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Kat, Over the years there have been times I've REALLY wanted to respond in kind, and just had to keep deleting and walking away.  Responding wouldn't have changed anything, even when the post is filled with outright lies.

You are so right about that.  If a bad first impression is made, it is almost impossible to overcome!

And it can work both ways, a favorable first impression may provide benefit of the doubt in the future.

Good morning Bill. Along the same lines I have used the quote: "Take your brain out of park before you put your mouth in drive" and yet have myself been guilty of not doing so. Thanks for the reminder. Enjoy your day.

Good morning Bill,

Its sad really to observe agents who can't control their urges to make a political statement. It tells me they are not the ones I want to trust my valued clients with. Self control goes hand in hand with honesty and integrity.

Dorie, we're like minded.  If one can't demonstrate self-control, what happens the first time a transaction has a problem?  Gasoline on the fire, or calm?

I work with a flipper that does the most beautiful work inside you have ever seen. He always cuts corners outside. I explain EVERYTIME that he loses some buyers who never even come in. Curb appeal is certainly a first impression.

Jul 14, 2026 07:12 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Curb appeal is certainly a critical part, if you can't get the buyers through the door, how can they ever see the great work?

It is sad when folks resort to social media to try to take someone down. It is not a good look for any professional.

And a fair number of these people are agents I know from years ago here in the Rain.  It's a small world in many ways.

Ritu, and it doesn't take a lot in today's environment to destroy any trust.

Sooo very true !! Frequently a first impression today … is with an improperly programmed Ai agent!! Not good !

Jul 14, 2026 11:22 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Paddy, if someone's AI is hoping a deceased politician is in a very hot place, we've certainly got some programming issues!  I fear all the comments I've seen lately were straight up humans responsible.

Bill once something is posted it is generally there forever, so it is not very smart for someone in this business to post something that will cost them future business or job.  It is especially DUMB to make a negative comment about someone who just passed away no matter what your personal feelings might be of that person.  If you feel you need to write it, write it, don't post it, and delete it.

Jul 14, 2026 04:35 PM

George, it would practically be a full time job screen capping and sending to brokers if someone was of that mindset.  I suspect more than a few brokers would be releasing some of their agents back into the wild if they saw their "true" face shown to the public.

So true!  I always say to myself, 'If you're going to do it, do it well!'  That goes for just about everything in my life.  It's served me well.

And it's the best path.  You don't have to ever wonder if you should have done something more, when you already know you did "more" from the start.

I would agree, but I would also say that you have to really know yourself to really know what kind of impression you want to make and if it’s consistent with your values and that’s a really important part.

Great reminder, Bill & Liz. It's easy to forget that our online presence is basically a permanent extension of our business card — one impulsive comment can undo months of relationship-building. The point about brokers being on the hook for what agents post is one a lot of people don't think through until it's too late. "Pushing away the keyboard" might be some of the best free advice in this whole post. Thanks for another solid Ask An Ambassador!

Gwen Fowler SC Lakes & Mountains 864-710-4518 , and there are definitely people that have burned the bridge to relationships and referrals because they couldn't restrain themselves.  And the damage isn't always limited to just the agent, but can hurt the entire brokerage.  Back when we were associated with a certain big brand, we'd get some business because we were affiliated, and sometimes lose business because another agent with the same brand hadn't passed the client's real life exam.

Bill for years I've steered clear of folks that act before they think things through clearly.  First impression means just that....make it your best.

People's use of the keyboard tells me a lot about whether I'd be comfortable sending family/friends/clients to them as a referral.  A time and a place, and if an agent has trouble with that concept, well...

Unlike you I did (early on) respond to some bad comments vs. delete and walk away.  But I grew and learned and now handle it that way.

I recently had an encounter where someone asked me to be a discount broker for him.  I said no go and there we have it.  I'm sure his impression wasn't great, but I feel I handled it very professionally.

At almost a couple of decades in this community, much of how I operate today is radically different than how I started in the Rain.
