One of the most common requests I hear from homeowners in The Villages is, "How can I create more privacy in my backyard?" Whether you're relaxing on your lanai, enjoying your pool, or simply looking for a little separation from your neighbors, the right landscaping can make a big difference.
Creating privacy in The Villages requires a balancing act. Most Community Development Districts (CDDs) have landscaping guidelines that regulate hedge heights. In my CDD, hedges generally cannot exceed four feet. However, there are creative ways to increase privacy while staying within the community standards.
One option is to layer your landscaping. Instead of relying on a single hedge, consider planting Dwarf Sugar Palms behind lower shrubs. These attractive palms typically grow to around eight feet tall and provide excellent screening around lanais and pools while adding a tropical Florida look.
When we purchased our home, we planted Viburnum about four feet apart. Within two years, the shrubs had filled in nicely to create a dense hedge. Since Viburnum often grows one to two feet per year, purchasing smaller plants can save money while still producing excellent results.
Other popular privacy plants for Florida include Wax Myrtle, Areca Palms, Clusia, and Sea Grapes. Each offers a different appearance, growth rate, and maintenance level, making it easier to choose the right combination for your yard.
One word of advice: Before planting, review your CDD landscaping guidelines or Architectural Review Committee requirements. It's much easier to plan correctly than to remove plants later.
