Wordless Wednesday…Just One

Since February, we’ve been busy monitoring bluebird boxes for the spring mating season. Our own box in our backyard had its first brood in mid-February.

And, it’s only fitting that the mating season ends with the fourth brood here. Last week, we had 4 eggs ready to hatch.  And, last Wednesday, one lone chick emerged.  The other eggs were not viable.

So that you don’t suffer from nesting withdrawal, here is a red-winged blackbird nest that was in Green Cay Wetlands (2011). One of these thought I was getting too close to the nest.  It not only dive-bombed me but got me in the head so hard you could hear my “YIKES” across the boardwalk.

Good morning, Kathy... I guess one is better than none. Loved the blackbird nest... but who needs to start their day with a hit to the head by a bird!

Nina Hollander, Broker I'll miss checking on the nests every day. We'll make final rounds to do a final clean of the boxes.

Good morning Kathy. Your efforts to monitor nesting progress is not without some dangers. "Yikes" is mild to something I might have said. Enjoy your day.

Sad but at least there was one Kathy. Did she really hit you in the head?

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 YES!!!  I was on the boardwalk and didn't even know the nest was there. I was looking over the tall plants and didn't even see the bird coming.   It wasn't just a slight peck, either.

Kathy so now there will not be any more baby birds until next Spring.

George Souto We'll check one more box this week but I doubt there's a nest in it. On our walks, we've seen baby cardinals and blue jays, and I'm pretty sure we've seen baby squirrels around.

My daughter recently shared a photo of a nest in her yard with mama and three babies. It soon became two babies when one went missing. She noticed a hawk in the area and sure enough another was missing the next day and sadly the third one went after that. So sad.
