☕ Coffee Across The Miles with Dorie Dillard in Austin, TX!

Dorie’s story is not about chasing every opportunity. It is about becoming experienced enough to recognize which opportunities, relationships, communities, and commitments deserve your time. That may be one of the most valuable lessons a long real estate career can teach.

☕ Coffee Across The Miles with Dorie Dillard:
A Career Built on Relationships, Resilience,
and Deep Austin Roots

One of the best things about my Coffee Across The Miles conversations is having the opportunity to learn the fuller story behind my friends I have known through ActiveRain.

Sitting down together for an uninterrupted conversation,
only to realize I only knew the table
of contents to the story of so many of your lives.
That was certainly true of my conversation
with Dorie Dillard Austin TX

Dorie has been a familiar and respected presence in the ActiveRain community since 2008, we joined almost exactly at the same time in fact! But her story stretches far beyond her blog posts. It is a story of resilience, reinvention, family, professional longevity, and the wisdom that comes from knowing not only how to build a successful real estate career, but also how to keep it aligned with the life you actually want to live.

From New York to Austin

Dorie grew up in Schenectady, New York, and attended Iowa State University before life eventually brought her to Austin, Texas, in 1981.

Before real estate, her professional path included the fashion industry. She was also married to a Navy jet pilot, which meant frequent moves and learning how to adapt to new places and circumstances.

After parting ways with her first husband, Dorie spent several years raising her children as a single mother. Needing a new professional direction, she entered real estate in 1991. Yep, 35 years in real estate, and she's still sweet & sane! 😂

Real estate has a way of attracting people who have already learned how to solve problems, adjust quickly, and keep moving when life changes the original plan. Dorie brought all three qualities with her.

She joined Coldwell Banker in 1995 and has remained affiliated with the company for decades, building a respected business and deep roots throughout the Austin area.

Experience Teaches You Where to Focus

Early in a real estate career, many agents are willing to drive almost anywhere and work with almost anyone. A lead forty miles away? No problem.

Experience eventually teaches a different lesson.

Dorie now concentrates her business in north and northwest Austin, Cedar Park, and Round Rock. As Austin has grown, she has become increasingly intentional about where she works and whom she serves.

That focus allows her to understand the communities more deeply, operate more efficiently, and provide better service without spending half her life behind the windshield.

Dorie also prefers working with past clients and personal referrals. Those relationships begin with something cold leads rarely provide: trust.

When someone has already worked with you, knows your reputation, or has been referred by someone they trust, the relationship starts in a very different place. There is less posturing, less suspicion, and fewer conversations that begin with, “So, what exactly do you do for your commission?”

Dorie understands that a strong reputation is not merely a nice addition to a real estate business. Over time, it becomes the business.

Isn't It Time We Had A "Coffee Talk"?

When Culture Matters More Than the Logo

After many years with Coldwell Banker corporate, Dorie recently made the decision to move to the Coldwell Banker Apex franchise.

The name remained familiar, but the reason for her move had little to do with branding. It was about leadership and culture. This resonated with me as we both have CB in common.

Changes in corporate management had altered the environment Dorie had valued for years. When a respected broker-manager left, it became clear that the office was no longer the professional home it had once been.

Dorie followed the leadership and culture she trusted.

Her experience reinforces something seasoned REALTORS® eventually learn:
the logo on the building matters far less than the people inside it.

A major brand cannot compensate for poor leadership. A polished recruiting presentation cannot create genuine support. And no amount of company merchandise can replace a broker who listens, communicates, and understands what agents need to succeed.

At Apex, Dorie found a renewed sense of support under franchise owner Lori Arnold and a culture that once again felt collaborative and personal.

Real Estate Runs in the Family

Dorie did not simply build a successful real estate career. She appears to have created a family industry. Her son, John Dunham, and her daughter, Melissa Stout, are both successful REALTORS®. Her son-in-law works as a mortgage broker.

😂 Family dinners must occasionally require a formal motion banning discussions about inspections, financing, commission agreements, and whatever happened during the last multiple-offer negotiation.

John entered real estate after exploring other professional directions and quickly discovered his ability to succeed in the industry. Melissa began her career after her children’s demanding schedules, including volleyball, became less consuming, using her strong community relationships and local connections to build her business.

While family members may work under different models and brokerages, they share a deep understanding of the profession and the demands it places on the people who practice it.

Dorie’s five grandchildren remain an important part of her life as well. She makes time for their sporting events, special outings, and the everyday moments that become family history before anyone realizes it.

A Second Chapter with Gene ❤️

Real estate also played an unexpected role in Dorie’s personal life when she met her second husband, Gene, through the industry. Her story reminded me of how Ailina and I met, so I especially enjoyed hearing her recount their first encounter. Dorie spoke about Gene with genuine love in her eyes and tenderness in her voice, a familiar devotion I also recognized when Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400  shared stories about her beloved Lee.

Gene became a loving and supportive partner to Dorie and her children. After his retirement, the two traveled extensively and created a life filled with shared experiences.

Italy became especially meaningful to Dorie, with Florence standing out as a favorite destination. She experienced travel differently depending on her companions. Trips with Gene tended to be more structured and focused on seeing the important sights. Later travels with her daughter and granddaughter were more relaxed, allowing time to experience neighborhoods, shops, meals, and daily life more like locals.

There is something revealing in that distinction. The places we visit may remain the same, but the way we experience them changes depending on the season of life and the people walking beside us.

After Gene’s passing 7 years ago, Dorie made a conscious decision to reconnect with friends and rebuild her social life. She cultivated a close circle of women with whom she shops, attends movies, shares meals, and enjoys the simple companionship that helps keep life full.

She also walks each morning, creating time to move, think, and begin the day on her own terms.

Finding Community in The Rain

Dorie joined ActiveRain on 10/24/2008,  just 5 days after I first joined - during a period when blogging, search engine optimization, and online lead generation were dominant topics throughout the community.

Like many of us, she initially recognized the business potential of blogging.

But the lasting value turned out to be something deeper.

ActiveRain gave Dorie access to REALTORS® from markets across the country. She learned how agents in other states handled contracts, inspections, disclosures, negotiations, and local customs. She found mentors, colleagues, friendships, and a place where professionals could exchange ideas without pretending that anyone had the entire business figured out.

Dorie continues to use her blog to share market reports and useful information with her sphere, but she sees the relationships as the real return on her investment.

Algorithms change. Search rankings rise and fall. Platforms decide that the audience you spent fifteen years building should now be available only after entering a credit card number. Relationships remain.

The Real Dorie Dillard Story

What stood out most during my conversation with Dorie was not simply the length of her career.

It was the way she has adapted throughout it.

She entered real estate as a single mother searching for a new direction. She built a successful business through relationships and reputation. She raised children who developed their own careers in the industry. She changed brokerages when the culture no longer matched her values. She rebuilt her social world after loss. And she continues learning, sharing, traveling, blogging, and showing up for the people who matter to her.

Dorie’s story is not about chasing every opportunity. It is about becoming experienced enough to recognize which opportunities, relationships, communities, and commitments deserve your time. That may be one of the most valuable lessons a long real estate career can teach.

If you have a client, friend, or family member who needs an experienced and trusted REALTOR® in north or northwest Austin, Cedar Park, Round Rock, or the surrounding communities, I would confidently recommend Dorie Dillard.
