I Thought It Was Just a Foggy

Wisconsin Morning...

When a Wisconsin Sunrise Tells a Bigger Story

This was my view in Pleasant Prairie at about 10:35 this morning, July 17, 2026.

As I looked out across the neighborhood, I noticed the sky had a strange, hazy look to it. At first, I didn't think much of it. After all, this is Wisconsin. We get our share of foggy mornings, and I assumed it was simply another sunrise wrapped in mist.

But it wasn't.

A short time later, I learned that the smoky haze hanging over Southeast Wisconsin had traveled hundreds of miles from the devastating Canadian wildfires. It was amazing to think that something happening so far away could change the view right outside my own window.

As a Realtor, I'm always paying attention to the weather. Sunshine, storms, and changing seasons all have a way of influencing how we experience our homes and our communities. But this morning was different. It was a reminder that we live in a world that's more connected than we sometimes realize.

The smoke drifting over Wisconsin is a visible reminder of the incredible challenges families, first responders, and entire communities in Canada are facing. While many of us are simply noticing a hazy sky, countless others are living through evacuations, uncertainty, and heartbreaking loss.

My heart goes out to every family affected by these fires and to the brave firefighters risking their lives to protect others. I pray that God will give them strength, provide protection, and bring comfort and hope in the days ahead.

This experience also reminded me how easy it is to take ordinary things for granted. A crystal-clear blue sky. The ability to open our windows and breathe fresh air. A peaceful morning on the back patio with a cup of coffee. Sometimes it takes an unexpected event to remind us just how precious those simple blessings really are.

If you're spending time outdoors while the haze lingers, be mindful of the air quality and take care of your lungs, especially if you have asthma or other respiratory concerns.

Today, I'm choosing gratitude—for the home I get to serve from, the beautiful community of Pleasant Prairie, and every clear Wisconsin sky that reminds me just how blessed we are.

Sometimes a sunrise is more than just the start of another day. Sometimes it gently reminds us to pray for our neighbors, appreciate today's blessings, and never assume tomorrow will look exactly the same.

Hello GilbertRealtor BillSalvatore Glad you found this information interesting.  Have a nice day in Arizona.  It is 93 degrees there -- not bad for July -- although you are having air quality issues -- like us!  We are at 85 degrees -- with air quality alerts.

Thank you for the reblog.

What a powerful reminder that events happening hundreds of miles away can still touch our daily lives. It's easy to mistake the haze for a typical summer morning until you realize the bigger story behind it. Thank you for sharing both the beautiful sunrise and the perspective it brings. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the wildfires and the firefighters working tirelessly to protect their communities.

Alex Gandel I appreciate your thankful response to my blog today. It really is amazing how we are affected from such long distances.  Are you having air quality issues in California like our friends in Arizona? Just curious.

We noticed it in PA this morning as well, as we walked our dog, the sun looked red to orange through the haze. My wife read that Detroit is actually suffering the worst air quality in the world right now due to the smoke. That is something to consider and where you are was not far behind.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 yes air quality is a real problem -- I am going out in this to show properties and hope it is a short time outside as it is something we all need to take consideration of to protect ourselves and our clients.

🚨Public Service Announcement🚨
Wildfire smoke is impacting our air quality. If possible, limit your time outdoors, keep windows closed, and avoid strenuous activity until conditions improve.
Children, older adults, and anyone with heart or lung conditions should take extra precautions.
Stay safe, check your local air quality, and take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543  I saw they moved the time up for the Phillies-Mets game because of the smoke. They were concerned about the air quality.

Thank you! It really is amazing how connected we all are. We currently have a wildfire burning in the Santa Clarita area, about 30 miles from Simi Valley, so we're mindful of air quality here in Southern California as well. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, and I hope your skies clear soon. Thanks again for sharing your experience!

Diana, I saw this on the national news, and seems like there are so many fires in Canada every year, so sad.  Hope you skies clear up soon.

That is true, the air quality is poor and no one should be inhaling outdoors right now.

George Souto The smell is very similar to a pit fire - camping - but the dangers are worse.

Well at first I didn't even think about the fires in Canada.  But it did not take long for me to find out when I got online and started seeing the messages ... and then I took it from there.  Thank you Jeff Masich-Scottsdale AZ Associate Broker,MBA,GRI for your comments. Sounds like Arizona is dealing with the air quality issues too -- from California?

I love your post, Diana. We turned in to watch the Phillies-Mets game and learned it had been moved up an hour because of the air quality. They were concerned for those in attendance as well as the players. You are right...no matter how bad we feel we have it, there are the many in Canada who are experiencing conditions far worse than we are.

Kathy Streib Exactly.  Seems this is turning into a time of being more attentive to the world around us, the environmental effects and the decisions that need to be made by each individual depending upon their life situation, location, and health and wellness.

Diana Dahlberg - 1 MONTH REALTY good morning, Diana... I've been following the news and the pictures I've seen on TV totally gob-smacked me. Hopefully this will dissipate quickly and everyone is taking care about exposing themselves. I also woke up to very foggy conditions yesterday and today... thankfully, that was all it was: fog.

Diana I've been seeing and hearing about this on the news shows.  Sure looks horrible. I bet some folks need to either stay inside or wear a mask. Hopefully soon the fires will die down.

Good morning Diana. It is bad here in the Chicago area. They closed the pools in our neighborhood one day for health reasons. The following day the pools remained closed and the smoke danger increased. Yesterday was not bad. Today, we may be in for another heavy haze. Stay safe and enjoy your day.

Hi Wayne Martin ... my husband and I decided to take a drive to Niagara Springs, Wisconsin to see the waterfalls and didn't even think about it at the time -- until we were there.  Silly us ... we were driving toward not away from the fog, smoke, haze.  The smell there was actually much worse than here in SE Wisconsin.  What were we thinking???

Diana Dahlberg - 1 MONTH REALTY - thank you for sharing this news from Wisconsin for me and all the readers to learn more about the impact those Canadian fires are to people like you who are inhaling all that toxic smoke. You reminded me; I need to get in touch with my WI family members to find out how they are doing.

Yes! We do need to pray for our First Responders. That is something I do consistently whenever I see or hear an ambulance, firetruck, or a police parade driving quickly to their destinations. I will keep all the people, including you and your family in my prayers.

Good Morning Patricia Feager Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments about the Canadian Fires and the impact on them and those states around them.  We can see the clouds with blue sky again! But we must continue to pray for all (especially the Canadians) who were displaced and that includes all the animals ...In times like this I say, "ONLY GOD"
