I'm Proud to Be an American: A Legacy of Freedom, Faith & Gratitude

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, I find myself thinking less about fireworks... and more about the people who made my freedom possible.

This year, as America celebrates 250 years of independence, I've found myself thinking about what that really means—not just as a date in history, but as a personal blessing that has touched every generation of my family.

Like so many American families, my story didn't begin here. My grandparents came to this country with hopes for a better life. On my father's side, they came from Norway and Sweden. On my mother's side, they came from Germany. They left behind the familiar to embrace the promise of America—a nation built on opportunity, hard work, and freedom.

I often wonder what they must have felt as they stepped onto American soil. They couldn't have known what the future would hold, but they believed enough in this country to build a new life here. Because of their courage, I have been blessed with opportunities they could only dream about.

Growing up in a family of six siblings—two boys and four girls—life was full of activity, laughter, and plenty of adventures. Some of my favorite childhood memories were attending our community's Fourth of July parades. I loved the marching bands, the waving American flags, the veterans proudly wearing their uniforms, and the excitement that seemed to fill every street. Even as a little girl, those parades stirred something deep inside me. They reminded me that being an American was something special.

As I grew older, my appreciation for our country became even more personal.

Diana Army Reserves

I chose to serve in the United States Army Reserves, and that experience gave me an even greater respect for those willing to put on a uniform and defend our freedoms. Service requires sacrifice, discipline, and a commitment to something larger than yourself.

Charles Horvath Army Cook

Military service has been woven throughout my family's story. My father proudly served during the Korean War. My husband served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era and was stationed in Okinawa.

Daniel Turowski Marine with family

Years later, our son also became a United States Marine. Thankfully, he never had to experience combat, but his willingness to serve made me incredibly proud.

When I see our flag flying, I don't simply see red, white, and blue. I see generations of sacrifice. I think of the men and women who left their families, stood watch in dangerous places, and sometimes gave everything so that people like me could enjoy the simple freedoms we often take for granted.

Freedom has never been free.

As a Christian, I also recognize another freedom that shapes my life even more deeply—the freedom to worship God openly. Throughout history, countless people have lived under governments that restricted or even punished their faith. Here in America, I have been blessed with the liberty to pray, attend church, read my Bible, and openly share the hope I have found in Jesus Christ. That is a gift I never want to take lightly.

Our nation is far from perfect. Every generation has faced challenges, disagreements, and moments that tested our character. But I believe America has always been at its best when we remember the values upon which it was founded: faith, personal responsibility, compassion for others, and the belief that every person has value because they are created by God.

As a Realtor serving Southeast Wisconsin for more than three decades, I've also had the privilege of helping hundreds of families find a place to call home. Every time I hand someone the keys to their new house, I'm reminded that homeownership remains one of the great blessings and opportunities available in this country. For many families, owning a home represents hope, security, and the chance to build a better future—just as my grandparents once hoped to do.

Uncle Tony Korean War

Today, I am deeply grateful for those who came before me—my immigrant grandparents, my parents, our veterans, our first responders, and every American who has worked to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

Most of all, I thank God for His blessings upon this nation. My prayer is that America will continue to seek His wisdom, extend grace to one another, and remain a place where future generations can live in freedom and hope.

So why am I proud to be an American?

Because I stand on the shoulders of those who sacrificed before me.

Because freedom is worth protecting.

Because faith still matters.

Because opportunity still exists.

And because I believe that with God's guidance, America's greatest days can still be ahead of us.

God bless America.

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord..." — Psalm 33:12

"If My people, who are called by My name, humble themselves, and pray... then I will hear from heaven..." — 2 Chronicles 7:14

Like you, I grew up in a family of six siblings—two boys and four girls.

Thank you for your service in the United States Army Reserves.

I firmly believe people who have served, and/or come from a family that served, or is currently serving, hold a different view of "Freedom".

Freedom is not free. Nothing is truly free. Someone always pays.

I enjoyed reading your heartfelt post.

1. You learn to share

Diana,

Your story is a wonderful reminder that America's greatest strength has always been the courage and determination of those who came here seeking a better life. It's easy to focus on the celebrations, but reflecting on the sacrifices made by our ancestors and the freedoms we enjoy today gives Independence Day even greater meaning. Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt tribute to family, faith, and gratitude.
