Roy Kelley: A Life Built on Initiative, Service, and Deep Virginia Roots
I had been looking forward to this conversation with Roy because I knew it was going to be epic—and it absolutely was! I took 10 pages of hand-written notes!
I truly enjoyed our phone call, which lasted more than an hour and easily could have continued much longer. Roy has lived a life far too big for a single blog post, and his memory for names, dates, and details is still sharp as a tack.
I hope you enjoy getting to know Roy as much as I did!
Some people carefully map out every step of their careers. Roy Kelley graduated
from law school, earned three professional licenses, opened an office, and apparently decided he would figure out the details once the doors were unlocked.
That was 1961.
More than six decades later,
it is difficult to argue with his approach.
My Coffee Across The Miles conversation with Roy Kelley revealed more than a successful Maryland real estate career. His story stretches from being the first person in his family to attend college to becoming an attorney, real estate broker, insurance agent, award-winning RE/MAX professional, devoted husband, respected ActiveRain blogger, and family historian with roots extending back to colonial Virginia.
Roy has lived a life shaped by education, initiative, service, family, and perhaps just enough youthful confidence to begin before anyone had the chance to tell him he could not. Over 30 years a REALTOR® in Virginia and over 20 years in Maryland before he retired.
By the way, Roy’s connection to Virginia reaches much farther back than his years at the University of Virginia, they date back to Colonial times in the 1600's! But that will have to another blog in itself!
A Supportive Family and Two Big Surprises
Roy grew up in a supportive family.
His father was a police officer, real estate investor, and entrepreneur. His mother was a stay-at-home mom who supported the family and encouraged Roy’s ambitions. Neither parent had attended college, making Roy the first member of his family to do so.
That was a significant accomplishment in the 1950s, and Roy clearly understood the opportunity his parents helped provide. Roy also had a younger brother, who has since passed away, and two much younger sisters.
During Roy’s senior year of high school, his mother gave birth to twin girls. This came as quite a surprise to Roy, who suddenly found himself preparing for graduation while adjusting to the news that the family had expanded by two. Life has a way of changing the household seating chart without much advance notice.
From High School to Law School
Roy graduated from high school in 1955 and enrolled at the University of Virginia.
He did not linger.
He completed his undergraduate education in only three years, graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, majoring in Finance. He then continued at the University of Virginia School of Law and earned his Juris Doctor in 1961.
During the fall of 1960, while in his third year of law school, Roy passed the bar examination and obtained a Virginia real estate broker’s license along with multiple insurance licenses.
His connection to the University of Virginia remained meaningful throughout his life, including his later membership in the Thomas Jefferson Society.
FUN FACT #1 Roy shared a mailbox with Ted Kennedy while in Law School!
Open for Business in 1961
Straight out of law school, Roy opened a multipurpose professional office in a building owned by his parents.
He was officially open for business as:
An attorney
A real estate broker
An insurance agent
There was only one small detail.
Roy had never worked a day in his life as an attorney, broker, or insurance agent.
"When I opened my first real estate and insurance office, I was a member of the state bar but did not practice law." Roy
Yet there he was, licensed in all three professions and ready to serve the public. Naturally, I had to ask how he managed to do it. Roy credited on-the-job training, traveling to many in-person NAR training courses, and not knowing any better. 😉No one had told him he could not do it, so he simply did.
There is probably an entire business seminar hiding in that answer. 😂
Roy learned by serving clients, studying whatever he needed to understand, and solving the problems that appeared in front of him. His parents gave him more than a building. They gave him encouragement, confidence, and room to begin.
That foundation launched a professional life spanning law, insurance, investing, and real estate.
Meeting Dolores 🩷
Roy and his future wife, Dolores, attended the same high school, although they were one year apart and never really crossed paths. After high school, Dolores moved frequently because of her father’s military career. Years later, however, a mutual connection brought them together. "Dolores was at Cradock High School for her junior and senior years. Her father retired from the navy and the family stayed in the area. Previously, she had lived everywhere from New York to Washington, to Alaska and to Florida before living in Portsmouth. I think she went to 14 different schools as her father received naval assignments." Roy
Years later, Roy was attending a Lions Club oyster roast when a fellow club
member, who also happened to be Dolores’s neighbor, introduced them.
That introduction worked out rather well.
FUN FACT # 2 Roy and Dolores married on
June 12, 1965, and have now celebrated more than 61 years of marriage. Of course, I had to ask the obvious question:
“What is the secret to 61 years of marriage?”
Without hesitation,
Roy proudly answered,
“I married the best wife in the world! That’s how!”
I burst out laughing and asked, “I hope Dolores heard that?”
Roy giggled and replied, “She’s settin’ right here.”
So, Roy is not only charming, he is also a very smart husband.
A Respected Maryland Real Estate Career
Roy eventually established a respected career as an associate broker with RE/MAX Realty Group in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
For nearly two decades, he specialized in residential real estate throughout the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., including Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, and Prince George’s counties.
Roy worked extensively with buyers and sellers. His background in law, finance, insurance, and real estate gave him a broad perspective when helping clients evaluate properties, contracts, risks, and financial decisions.
He also developed specialized expertise in foreclosures and Real Estate Owned properties, commonly known as REOs. These transactions often involved institutional sellers, strict procedures, complicated property conditions, and less flexibility than a traditional sale.
In other words, Roy did not build his career by avoiding the difficult files.

Thorough by Design
Roy became known for being meticulous. Very meticulous. His listing presentations were not based on generic promises or one-size-fits-all packages. He created customized plans based on each property, its condition, the surrounding market, and the buyers most likely to appreciate it.
Roy understood that a successful listing began before the home officially entered the market. That meant evaluating curb appeal, helping sellers prepare the property, developing a thoughtful marketing strategy, and responding promptly to questions from prospective buyers and their agents.
His approach rested on a straightforward principle:
Details matter.
A property does not receive a second chance to make its first impression. A buyer’s question should not remain unanswered while that buyer’s attention quietly wanders toward another listing.
Roy’s preparation, responsiveness, and careful execution earned the trust of clients, colleagues, and fellow real estate professionals.
RE/MAX Lifetime Achievement
In 2008, Roy received the prestigious RE/MAX International Lifetime Achievement Award. It is one of the organization’s highest honors, recognizing associates who have completed significant service with the network, achieved substantial career transaction milestones, and previously earned induction into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame.
Awards never tell the complete story of a career, but this one confirmed what Roy’s clients and colleagues already knew. He had built an exceptional record of professionalism, consistency, and service.
A Lasting Voice on ActiveRain
Roy’s influence extended well beyond the homes he listed and sold.
Throughout his career and into retirement, he became a familiar and respected voice within the ActiveRain real estate blogging community. He shared Maryland market information, local events, photography, and the everyday observations that make a professional blog more personal and meaningful.
ActiveRain has always been at its best when experienced professionals share what they know without making every post an advertisement. Roy understood that! Roy was an early adopter, having been a member since February 27, 2007!

FUN FACT #3 Because of his blogging on Active Rain, Roy was approached by Ran House Publishing to receive boxes of books periodically for FREE to read and review online in blog and social media posts! (So it pays to post in The Rain)!
Roy's posts educated consumers, supported fellow REALTORS®, highlighted Maryland communities, and preserved moments through photography. Even after stepping away from active real estate practice, Roy remained connected to the relationships and conversations he developed there.
That may be one of the better measures of a professional life: people still value hearing from you after you no longer need to sell them anything.
A Life Connected by Knowledge, Family, and Land
There is a remarkable continuity running through Roy Kelley’s story. His ancestors established a family presence in colonial Virginia through immigration, land ownership, and enterprise.
Roy later built a distinguished career helping people navigate property ownership throughout Virginia and Maryland. Different centuries. Different rules. Considerably better indoor plumbing.
Roy’s career earned him recognition from RE/MAX International, the trust of his clients, and a lasting place within ActiveRain. His marriage to Dolores reflects more than six decades of partnership, devotion, laughter, and knowing exactly what to say when your wife is sitting nearby.
Roy Kelley did more than sell real estate. He built businesses, served clients, studied history, shared knowledge, and maintained relationships long after the transactions were complete.
Retirement has not ended the story. It has simply given Roy more time to tell it.
