Ask An Ambassador: More Work Then Means Less Work Now

It's my nature to try and be efficient with my efforts.  A lot of our pets are seniors, and just like humans, that sometimes means supplements and medications.  And when you're dealing with pets in the 5-10 pound range, a full size pill may be too much of a dose.  Cutting pills into halves (or even quarters) may be the order of the day.  Now in theory I could just dice them as I go, but IMO, that's not very efficient.  I'd rather take the pill cutter and go on a bit of spree, and cut enough of each pill to satisfy a week or two of demand.  No repeat handling, no opening the same things over and over, etc.

When I blogged, the same mindset applied.  If you're going to blog daily (or even multiple times in a day), you'd best figure out what works for your personal style because we all know, time is in short supply.

That might mean a certain work area, a certain photo supply site, a certain way of capturing ideas to safe for later, so when you're ready to blog, you can minimize your time and maximize your results.

The longer I blogged, and the more work I put into it, the more I was able to count on it paying off for a long time after I posted.  I'll say it again for the new folks, EVERGREEN POSTS ROCK!  Write content that sticks around.  Not every contact from those posts is going to convert to a client, but you'll regularly get affirmation that your posts written years ago are still being found.

And an additional upside is that I don't have to spend as much time blogging today as I did years ago.  I can do what I did this weekend.  I had something urgent to do, and that meant leaving my laptop behind.  I didn't log in to ActiveRain for several days (yes, it's possible, even for Rain addicts such as myself).  I've done the work in the past, so I have less work to do now.

Find what works for you, put in the work to make it worth your while, then take the down time you've earned.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Good morning Bill. Like your line of thinking and passing along the suggestion. Nothing wrong with being prepared in advance to aid your addiction. Enjoy your day.

Wayne, it's a bit different now than years ago.  I could actually go the entire day without logging in to the Rain without getting the shakes, but I had other things on my mind.

Good morning Liz and Bill. Putting in the groundwork and creating evergreen content early on definitely pays off in the long run. Thanks for sharing this great reminder on how efficiency and preparation create more freedom down the road!

It's nice being able to have more flexibility at this point in my life.  A lot of groundwork performed years ago to provide that time now.

Good morning Bill,

I take a calcium pill that is just to hard for me to swallow (I hate pills to begin with) so I split it in half and take half in the morning and the other half in the evening. Yesterday I split 5 weeks worth of pills so I don't have to contend with this chore daily. I totally agree efficiency is the key to success and more time for us..its all in a balance.

Dorie, I've got a couple of fish oil pills that are HUGE, but I can't cut them :)
Before I went out of town, I diced enough pet pills to last a couple of weeks so Liz wouldn't have to deal with it at all for the few days I was gone.

Some of my oldest posts still get lots of attention. When I first started blogging I had no idea how successful it would make me.

Posts from around 2010/2011 can still cause my phone to ring.

Having a plan in place that makes sense and saves time - works!  Your cutting medication pills analogy is perfect!  I had to laugh as I did the same thing with one of our pets. Done!

I find it time consuming to handle things every day.  I was the same way on our assembly floor, looking for ways to grab/assemble parts in a way that would save me reaches and time, and if I could find a better way, I could share it with my assembly team.

Bill what works for me her in the Rain has changed over time.  But each time I have changed what I do, I have tried to do it as efficiently and as stress free as possible.

George, no doubt, how I blog now vs. years ago has shifted radically.

That's why I schedule all of my posts, and most are created a week in advance, haha.

Brian, most often lately, I write my AAA the evening before with an autopost set up for 8 a.m. EST.

Bill, I really appreciate your presence on ActiveRain and all your weekly blog posts. I've been missing because I took a job as an Independent Contractor for the Denton County Tax Appraisal District. There were several times these past few months when you came to mind. I heard about the flooding in Cincinnati and West Virginia. Plus, there were other stories I heard that caused me to think of you and your move.

You have been a vital member of ActiveRain - and you do it all for us! Before reading with others wrote to get caught up with what I missed, I wrote a blog post about time too. Now that I read your weekly post, this phrase "Time is in short supply," really resonated with me and I was happier than usual to read your blog post today. Timing was perfect!!!

I hope you and Liz will be settled into your new home with your furry family and all the bees soon.

Patricia Feager , that sounds like a job that might put your real estate experience to use!  I got to talk to my new county's tax assessor office this morning after I got my new tax bill yesterday.  We'd previously been taxed just on the raw land, but apparently they can treat us based on the estimated finish amount of our new home, so while the levy rate decreased by 50%, the assessed value quadrupled, so our tax bill doubled :)
We are making progress (albeit slow progress) towards getting the new home ready.

My real estate experience has been a tremendous benefit to understand more about property taxes and how the District determines Market Value, including appraising land values, new construction, estimated finish amount on a new home, depreciation, temporary exemptions due to damage by disaster, temporary circuit breaker limitations on real property, agricultural, open space or timber land appraisals, determination of value and equal appraisal, and so much more. Understanding Texas Tax Code is very important!

I was asked to come back in August for more work and I agreed.

It is a well-known fact; good things take time. You'll be in your new home soon!

Liz and Bill, the idea of doing more work upfront so the process becomes easier later is a useful reminder. The most valuable early effort seems to be the kind that creates a repeatable foundation rather than another one-time task. For someone new to ActiveRain, what setup step do you think saves the most time later?

Evan Ye , it may not apply as much in your case, but for real estate agents who may change brokerages, setting up your blog signature to have all your pertinent information up front rather than manually adding a signature in the post body allows for a complete update of all blog posts in a few moments if one does change brokerages (we've changed twice in 20+ years).  A few clicks, and everything is updated.
