☕ Coffee Across The Miles with Dr. Paula McDonald: A Life of Learning, Resilience, and Reinvention
Dr. Paula McDonald’s journey has been anything but typical, although I am learning through these interviews that “anything but typical” may be fairly typical for a REALTOR®. It is also why Paula was a natural fit for Coffee Across The Miles. I knew her name and her online presence. This conversation allowed me to understand the remarkable path behind them.
That is precisely what makes her story so compelling. She has been a biology teacher, real estate professional, broker, author, public speaker, lifelong student, mother, and grandmother. And now, 📰 Breaking News: as of July 20, 2026, Paula is a Galveston resident and the new Broker of Record for Sand & Sea Realty, beginning another professional chapter along the Texas coast! 😊
Our Coffee Across The Miles conversation was a very anticipated one - we'd both had the desire to connect like this for a while now. Yep, although Dr. Paula McDonald and I had known each other through years of ActiveRain, our visit gave me the opportunity to learn the story behind her posts, comments, credentials, and professional profile.
That is one of the reasons I started these conversations. We may interact with someone online for years, but there is a big difference between recognizing a name and truly knowing the person behind it.
A Teacher and Lifelong Student
Long before Paula entered real estate, she built her career in education.
With an undergraduate degree in biology, she spent approximately 20 years teaching high school biology, anatomy, and physiology. She also taught college-level coursework to high school students, giving young people an early introduction to the complexity of the human body and the natural world.
Teaching was more than a job for Paula. It reflected something that remains central to who she is: an intense curiosity and a genuine love of learning.
She later completed 19 hours toward a master’s degree in biology. Even when life pulled her in other directions, her interest in education never disappeared.
That curiosity would eventually lead her into real estate, health research, theology, writing, and public speaking. Paula does not seem particularly interested in remaining inside one professional box. Once she begins asking questions, she tends to keep going until she understands the larger picture.
A New Career in Real Estate
In 2005, Paula’s life entered a period of transition.
Her marriage had ended, and she was looking for a new direction that would provide both independence and opportunity. She had been exposed to real estate and homebuilding through her former husband’s work as a custom home builder, so the industry was not entirely unfamiliar.
Once Paula decided to pursue her real estate license, she did not waste much time. She completed her coursework online and earned her license in approximately one month. That rapid start was appropriate because Paula was about to receive an education no licensing course could fully provide.
She entered the profession in 2005, just a few years before the housing market collapsed. By 2008, real estate professionals across the country were facing foreclosures, short sales, falling property values, tightening credit, and frightened consumers. Houston was not immune. Paula was also raising two teenagers and needed to build a dependable business in a market that was anything but dependable.
Returning to the classroom might have appeared to be the safer choice.
Paula chose to remain in real estate.
Instead of waiting for the market to improve, she studied the market that actually existed. She earned additional certifications, learned the foreclosure and short-sale process, and developed specialized knowledge that many agents did not yet possess.
She also approached local banks and worked to position herself as a knowledgeable resource for distressed properties. That decision reflects an important theme in Paula’s career. When circumstances change, she does not simply complain about the new reality. She studies it, finds the unmet need, and develops the expertise necessary to serve it.
The foreclosure crisis was a difficult period, but Paula built a business by becoming useful where the market needed her most.
Building Relationships Through ActiveRain
Paula became involved with ActiveRain February 12, 2010. For Paula, ActiveRain is more than a real estate blogging platform; it is a professional community where REALTORS®, lenders, inspectors, stagers, and other industry professionals exchange ideas, share experiences, debate practices, and impart humor. That is why relationships matter.
Paula and I discussed how those deeper connections can improve professional relationships and referrals. Referring a client to another REALTOR® should involve more than selecting a name from a directory. The strongest referrals are built on confidence in the person’s character, communication style, knowledge, and commitment to clients.
ActiveRain has given both of us an opportunity to build those connections across state lines.
A Health Crisis Changes the Direction
Approximately 16 years ago, Paula faced a life-altering health crisis.
Despite being a lifelong non-smoker and runner, she was diagnosed with a lung tumor and ultimately lost one of her lungs. Faced with difficult medical decisions, Paula chose not to pursue chemotherapy. Instead, she began researching health, wellness, environmental exposure, and the ingredients found in products people use every day.
A physician at MD Anderson encouraged her to examine and eliminate certain potentially harmful ingredients from her environment, including parabens commonly found in personal-care and household products.
For a biology teacher, this advice opened an entirely new field of study.
Paula began looking more closely at the relationship between what people put in their bodies, what they place on their skin, what they bring into their homes, and how physical health interacts with emotional and spiritual well-being.
The deeper she researched, the more convinced she became that health could not be approached as a collection of separate parts.
That realization led Paula to develop a concept she calls "theosynthesis", or
"in union with God", her trademarked term inspired partly by photosynthesis. In biology, photosynthesis describes how plants convert light into energy. Paula’s concept of theosynthesis explores the balance among mind, body, and spirit.
Her belief is straightforward: when one of those areas is neglected or significantly out of balance, the effects eventually show up elsewhere. Physical health can influence emotional health. Emotional stress can affect the body. Spiritual disconnection can shape how people experience both.
Her health crisis became more than something she survived. It became the foundation for a new area of study, teaching, and service.
From Dissertation to Published Author
Paula’s academic journey eventually led her to pursue a doctorate in biblical theology. She is quick to explain that the degree was not about becoming a preacher. Rather, it was an extension of her lifelong desire to study, understand, and connect ideas involving science, wellness, faith, and human behavior.
To reach that goal, she needed to continue advancing her education, including completing the requirements for her master’s degree, her doctoral coursework, and ultimately her dissertation. The sequence was somewhat unconventional, but Paula found a way to make it work.
Then COVID-19 brought much of the world to a standstill. At the same time, Paula was recovering from a severe ankle injury that greatly limited her mobility. Unable to move around as she normally would, she chose to use the unexpected pause productively, finishing her coursework and moving her dissertation forward. What could have been merely a season of confinement became an opportunity to complete an important chapter in her education.
That is another recurring pattern in her life. Where many people might see only interruption, Paula looks for the opportunity hidden inside it. Her doctoral dissertation developed the ideas behind theosynthesis and ultimately became her published book, Live Today. By the way, the book title is also her license plate # 😂.
The book explores the importance of cleaning up one’s life from the inside out, creating greater balance among mind, body, and spirit, and making intentional choices rather than postponing life for some imaginary “better time.”
Paula has also shared these ideas through speaking engagements and women’s conferences, turning an intensely personal health experience into something that could help others examine their own lives.

Family, Partnership, and a New Chapter
Paula’s story is also one of family responsibility and resilience.
She and her husband, Mark, were friends for approximately five years before marrying. Both had previously experienced long marriages and brought a great deal of life experience into their relationship. They've now been married over 15 years!
Together, they adopted Paula’s grandson, Caden, and began raising him as their son. Parenting a young child again in one’s 50s was not necessarily the chapter Paula expected, but she speaks about it with the perspective of someone who understands that family life rarely follows the original blueprint.
More recently, Paula and Mark made another significant change by moving to Galveston, Texas. And Paula, true to form, did not arrive on the island planning to quietly fade into the beach scenery.
She became the broker of Sand & Sea Realty, described as Galveston’s longest-standing real estate office. Her current real estate interests include historic commercial properties, a specialty well suited to a city filled with architectural character, layered history, and properties that require more than a cookie-cutter approach. She told me we need to distinguish ourselves as REALTORS® with the niches we serve, we can't just be selling rooftops these days lest we become replaceable. Historic real estate demands curiosity, research, creativity, and respect for the story of a building. Those qualities fit Paula remarkably well.
Why the Human Connection Still Matters
As our conversation moved through real estate, education, health, theology, family, and technology, we returned repeatedly to the importance of human connection; it all comes down to relationships!
Dr. Paula McDonald’s career illustrates what happens when professional knowledge is combined with adaptability, resilience, curiosity, and genuine interest in others. She moved from the biology classroom into real estate. She survived one of the hardest housing markets in modern history by developing new expertise. She transformed a frightening medical diagnosis into years of research, a doctoral dissertation, a book, and a wellness philosophy. She embraced parenting again, built a new life with Mark, and recently relocated to Galveston to lead a historic real estate company into its next chapter.
That is quite a journey. And somehow, I suspect Paula is still only getting started.
Paula and I ended our conversation with the possibility that she may turn the tables and interview me in the future. I will try to have my story straight by then. ☕😂
