George Souto - Although I never smoked in my life, I do know people who did smoke. Being able to stop cold turkey is the bravest thing a smoker can do! 

Stepping away to take a break or end your career in the real estate and/or mortgage business is also very, very hard. But it is the best thing to do for one's own mental and physical well being. 

I was glad you had the courage to do both without regrets. 

Gerard Gilbers - There are many business owners who are even afraid to step away for a few hours to eat a good and healthy meal. Those fast food shops can be habit forming and very bad for one's health. Even worse, is skipping meals. Our bodies need good food, proper resting, and space away to breathe and relax.

Joan Cox, Retired Broker/Owner - 2026 is a pivitol year for you. All the planning and things you had to do in 2025 to get to where you are today was not easy. It must have been very important to you to keep the business running when you left to go to Portugal. Knowing you put someone in charge who was very adept had to be very reassuring. 

I wish you well as your new life continues to evolve. May the people you meet and have gotten to know be there to support you always. As for ActiveRain, you are still here - present in our virtual world. I for one am glad!!!

Wayne Martin - I don't know why or who planted the seed in my head that I was irreplaceable, but I found out all people who work for a living are replaceable and business must go on. Whether we are employees, self-employed, start up our own business, or independent contractors we need work to make a living but people who need something bad enough will always find a way through other people to get their needs met. 

Getting someone to run our business in our absence, is the smartest thing to do. If people are still there and glad to see us when we come back, we know being recharged was worth it! To have a smart phone is one thing, to be a smart human is the greatest accomplishment of all!

Where there's a will; there's a way! And that's the American Story of honest, hard working people who were never financially gifted without ever having to worry about money, education, a home of their own, a vehicle, and the list goes on. 

Taking a proper vacation is the best gift without ribbons and bows we give ourselves

Kat Palmiotti - People who don't think highly enough of themselves and can't trust someone to do their work in their absence, have no one else to blame but themselves. 

Time on earth is precious. I've never gone to a funeral and heard anyone say, rest in peace, you worked yourself to death. 

Nina Hollander, Broker - The trouble with burn out is most people don't even know they are burned out --- but others recognize it. 

There is no breach of contract if a person steps away from their business and there's someone to replace them in their absence. 

Our time is valuable and finding a way to run a healthy business should be top priority. It's good you found that out long ago.

Brian England - Something I discovered when I stepped aside and did something for myself, like travel or take a vacation, is discovering something new to implement, create, or change the way I ran my business. There were also times when I found a spiffy new dress, some fun jewelry, gifts for my kids or other people, or something decorative for my own house. Or there were brilliant moments when I discovered a different way to market myself that I learned from my experience while traveling. 

Life is a series of learning!!!

Kathy Streib - WOW! What a dilema you were faced with on the day Larry said to you "I must be doing something wrong," if you couldn't take four days off as a manager. It must have felt like cold water splashed on your face! But it needed to be said and Larry was right.

It is scary to step away to take time out for your own sake.

I discovered my fear was just in my head. People, good friends and relatives who supported me were happy to hear good news. I also received good advice about my trips that I wouldn't have known if the people who needed to know, didn't know.

Debra Leisek - I am delighted to learn you are inspired to break free and take some time off to do something relaxing just for you! It's so easy to get trapped in a busy business world when you're serving clients. And even if you're not, you find things you need to do to stay in business.

If it's necessary to stay focused on clients, it is just as important to stay focused on your own life and personal needs. We all need to get recharged by stepping away now and then. I hope you follow through. You deserve it!!!

It was a nice surprise to see one of my posts get featured. Thank you for your comment that felt so good to me! As a child, my family only took one vacation when I was about five years old. I made it my life's mission to travel as often as I can. But when I got into real estate, it was very difficult to step away from the business. I felt I had to have complete control because I didn't belong to a Team. The first time was the hardest, but as you said, I also discovered I became more productive each and every time I found someone to cover my business. Those vacation trips and time I spent with my family were the greatest because I was relieved of duty and could truly enjoy my time with loved ones or even strangers. The body has to unwind - it does the body, mind, and soul, so much good!
